I'm curious why UND still hasn't chosen a new nickname. I believe the NCAA mandated that they couldn't start using a new one until two years after they gave up the Fighting Sioux nickname (and I have no idea what the rationale may have been for that ruling), but it's been well over two years now, hasn't it? I believe they officially joined the BSC in the summer of 2012, and I'm sure the nickname was gone long before that.

Here's an update. One thing they got wrong (I think), only one of two tribes rejected the Fighting Sioux nickname.

That was interesting...thanks for the link. It seems sort of crazy that it should have to take four plus years for them to choose a new mascot/nickname.

I think they are dragging their feet. Fighting Sioux is still their "unofficial" nickname until they pick a new one and that's probably fine with them-they're still making money off of it apparently.

If people really think this is racism, they have no idea what racism really is.

There was a "cooling off" period that the state legislators decided to implement. There is also another state politician trying, not sure if he still is trying, to extend the no-name period. His reasoning is to try an get to Sioux name back or that's what I got out of it. the University has started a taskforce to come up with a plan to come up with a new name, while an other taskforce later to be appointed comes up with the new name. It could be another year or two before a new name is picked.

There are some people that can't let it go that the Fighting Sioux name isn't coming back.
