Does Florida Gulf Coast want to join the low-major division? No thanks, we'll stay in the Sweet 16 and be talked about and shown on national TV. Does George Mason want to join? No thanks, that one final 4 appearance did more for us than a FCS championship has ever done for anyone. Do other schools want to join? No thanks, we might be the next FGCU or George Mason! In football, there is zero chance for a "low-major" team to compete for a title because only 2 (or 4 in the future) teams even get a shot to play for the highest level national title and they're almost guaranteed to come from the power conferences. Not so in basketball, where the "little guys" get a shot to compete and win as long as they're good enough.John K wrote:This is precisely why I would be a proponent of forming some sort of separate basketball division for "low major" D-I programs. Would you rather be WSU, making a run at the title in this tourney (which I readily admit that no one pays attention to nationally, just like the FCS in football), or would you rather be UM, whose season is over after getting blown out by almost 50 points in the 1st round of the NCAA tourney? As a fan, I think I would prefer WSU's situation. Good luck to WSU in the semis...go Cats!!

Weber took down Northern Iowa tonight on the road and will host East Carolina in the championship game Tuesday night. Pretty awesome, go Wildcats!

Great for them and great for the league!MSU01 wrote:Weber took down Northern Iowa tonight on the road and will host East Carolina in the championship game Tuesday night. Pretty awesome, go Wildcats!
How about this: I understand Northern Iowa beat Wichita State this season-Wichita State is in the final four. So Weber beat UNI, and our own MSU Bobcats beat Weber State. So yeah-we were sooooo close!

Re: Other post season basketball tournament
Amazing. Quite honestly, I didn't think it was possible. That's four quality wins. Cal Poly (18-14; #3 Big West), Air Force (18-14; #3 MWC), Oral Roberts (20-15; #3 Southland) and No. Iowa (21-15; #3 MVC).
That's also Weber's 30th win on the season! The BSC now has a 6-4 record in the CIT. The CIT is a good home for the BSC teams. The NIT with all its power conference .500 teams is too loaded and so, obviously, is the NCAA.
Nice to see Syracuse is also stifling other teams besides just UM. Held Marquette to 39 yesterday and also did a number on Indiana. Syracuse will now be begging the selection committee to make them a 4-seed and pair them against a Montana team in the tourney from now on. When they beat MSU in '96 they were a 4-seed and went all the way to the championship game. They're definitely the hottest team in the tourney right now.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Also like in 1996, Syracuse may well not lose until they go up against a #1 seed out of the state of Kentucky coached by Rick Pitino in the title game. These are the kind of things you wish you had thought of before filling out your tournament bracket with Indiana taking out Syracuse in the Sweet 16!TomCat88 wrote:Amazing. Re: Other post season basketball tournament
That's pretty cool for WSU, and I wish them the best of luck tomorrow night. I don't intend any smack by saying this, but I don't think there's any doubt that WSU was a better team than UM by the end of the season, and their run in this tourney pretty much confirms that. Although UM's effort against Syracuse is not looking quite so bad anymore, now that Syracuse has had their own very impressive run to the Final Four. This has to be the first time in history that a BSC team has played for the championship in any post-season tourney. I know it's only a 3rd or 4th tier post-season tourney, but WSU's success still goes a long ways toward salvaging some dignity for the entire BSC.

Re: Other post season basketball tournament
Weber has played well in the CIT. Griz obviously really struggled vs. Syracuse. Weber might have been the better "NCAA fit" for the BSC with its size and might beat the Griz on a neutral court more time than they'd lose. Griz probably overachieved and took advantage of a weak BSC to help host the tourney, then played two good games in the conference tourney. Yes, Weber might have been the better fit, but didn't win the game they had to to get the chance to prove it. Proud of the Griz and their season.

Re: Other post season basketball tournament
Again, I didn't intend my comments as a knock on the Griz. They've gone 38-2 in the BSC over the past two seasons, which is very impressive, no matter how weak the league may be these days. And certainly no MSU fan should be talking smack about UM or anyone else, when the subject is MBB. But WSU beat them by 25 in Ogden late in the season, and barely lost the tourney title game in Missoula, so I stand by my comment that WSU was the better team at the end of the season. UM has us to thank for hosting the tourney and winning the title, since it was our win over WSU that handed the regular season title to the Griz.mousegriz wrote:Weber has played well in the CIT. Re: Other post season basketball tournament
Weber had a tough Big Sky tourney. After an easy game against NAU they barely eeked out a win over a red hot North Dakota team, then they had to play the griz with two games under their belt. Weber has played much better in the CIT. The tourney comes out of obscurity somewhat with the title game being televised national on the CBS Sports channel (which is one I even get). Here's hoping for a good showing. I have no idea what East Carolina has, but they're from North Carolina where the basketball is generally pretty good.John K wrote:Again, I didn't intend my comments as a knock on the Griz.
