I also want to sue every southerner who has ever used the "Y" word because they don't use it in a positive manner and they aren't a "Y" so they can't call me one. BTW, I was born and raised in the northern part of the US and my wife and family are from the south, so not only am I "affected" by this words use (to satisfy BAC's criteria) but I also experience it first hand on a regular basis and I'm offended!
WHERE'S MY MONEY?!?
p.s. If you can't sense the sarcasm in this post you might need to check your pulse!
Sarcasm aside, I'm not aware of anybody ever suing anyone else for monetary damages for offending them over a mascot nickname ... this is a question of avoiding disrespecting other people's culture by avoiding using their cultural identity for marketing purposes of an organization's sports teams in a way that offend them, not about those groups suing for cash damages. Even suggesting that in a sarcastic manner is implying things that are probably not true and may well skew the real issues. It seems to suggest that the people who are voicing their concerns about how their culture is portrayed by these teams' marketing campaigns are only out for a quick buck and have no sincere or genuine concerns. In many cases, I'm not sure this is the case at all.
But if Americans find the use of the term "Yankees" to be offensive and disrespectful to them and vote accordingly to request that the New York baseball team cease using it, then I think it would be an issue worthy of discussion.

What about southerners using the "Y" word? How do I get Al Sharpton to beat that drum for me?

If they used it as a mascot for their sports team, then I guess you might be able to make a stink about it. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
But outside the scope of this topic, if anyone is offended by someone else calling them a name ... then we have a whole different issue to discuss.
Fortunately, that's not an issue that has anything to do with the UND issue.

The best part of Minnesota's "enforcement" of their policy is the fact that this season their men's basketball team will play
non-conference games against Florida State and Central Michigan, while their women's team will face Utah.
Boy, they must really feel strongly about this issue.
They may not have a say in whether the can or cannot play UND in hockey, but I'll bet if anyone in the Twin Cities area is interested in Fighting Sioux apparel, they can head on over to the pro shop of their hockey arena, I hear they usually have a pretty good selection

Haven't all three of those schools received permission from the respective tribes they are named after to continue using the name and mascot and thus are free of any NCAA restrictions? It has been my understanding that UND has yet to gain that from the Sioux.

I believe that Florida State and Utah both received the tribe's permission to use their name as a mascot, didn't they? I know FSU definitely did ... not sure how the Utah thing worked out.

Yes, those schools were given exemptions by the NCAA. In fact, of the 20 schools originally on the list, UND is the only one that remains. The others have either been exempted, or changed their name.
However, Minnesota level of hypocrisy is elevated because their
policy of the Advisory Committee:
discourages Minnesota's school's athletics department from competing against all teams with American Indian mascots and nicknames.
If they want to use the NCAA's "guidelines", then that is fine. But then they should change their policy to read "The U of Minnesota will play any team from the NCAA, except North Dakota".
Just my two cents.
