First, I think there's a difference between TV and radio announcers. TV guys should be more impartial because they will be seen/heard by a wider audience. Radio guys, in your example Gurnsey, work for the "MONTANA Radio Network". Of course they're going to be impartial. 99.5% of the people listening are fans of that program.
Now that said, I don't think Mick and Gurns are anymore homerish than the vast majority of local radio guys I hear as I travel around the country.

I have not had a vast amount of experience in listening to various teams local radio broadcasts, so I cannot really comment on how Holien and Gurnsey's "homerism" compares to others around the country. I can only say that I find them to be extremely "homeristic", and I sincerely do not think that any of MSU's radio guys have ever approached their level, and I would be embarrassed if they did.GrizinWashington wrote:First, I think there's a difference between TV and radio announcers. GW - You're absolutely crazy and you know nothing about football and broadcasting. There is NO WAY Bennet isn't a homer.GrizinWashington wrote:If you think Bennett is a homer and leaves ANYTHING to be desired for someone covering games at our level, you know nothing about both football and broadcasting. Gurnsey, Bennet ,and Hermes all leave a lot to be desired on being hometown announcers WITHOUT being annoying homers. Hermes did reach a new low today. Gurnsey and Bennet at least have decent moments, almost everything Hermes said today was annoying. To quote a griz fan on this thread "unintelligent goo".
Listen to Steve Raible cover the Seahawks on the radio and local Seattle TV to see how it's done.
As for Raible, are you serious???
Apparently you consider yourself and expert on football and announcing. What sets you apart from the rest of us football fans? It's obvious that you aren't an expert, since you can't see Bennet's homerism. Someone who could be objective, would see the homer BS coming through despite his knowledge of the game. It's not like I completely dissed the guy. Maybe you need to re-read my post.
I like Raible. He must be doing something right, he's been doing it for a long time. What's your beef with the guy?

Mash, please learn to read, then post. I have stated (not in the post you attached), that Gurnsey is a homer. In the post you attached, I stated that Grady Bennett is not a homer. At our level, Grady is the best there is. If you believe he's a homer, it's because you're a blue and gold homer.MashTun wrote:GW - You're absolutely crazy and you know nothing about football and broadcasting. It's obvious that you aren't an expert, since you can't see Gursey's homerism. Someone who could be objective, would see the homer BS coming through despite his knowledge of the game. As for Raible, no he really hasn't been doing it all that long. He's only been the play by play guy for five years or so. And I've got absolutely nothing aginst the guy. He does a very credible job. I just can think of any number of guys who I believe do it better (admitting that this is a rather subjective issue). And believe me, Raible is a homer.

And Raible has done play by play for longer than five years BTW.
Meant Bennet, typed gurns. Fixed it.
You have jumped me on previous posts by misreading, so there's history on that. I wouldn't be so self righteous.
It's obvious we'll have to agree to disagree on Bennet. As for a homer I guess it takes a dark pink and silver one to know one.

Raible has been play by play guy since 2004, less than 5 years:
As for Grady, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. It's just that you're the only one with it.
http://www.kirotv.com/station/1867929/detail.htmlIn 2004, Steve moved from analyst to play-by-play announcer for the Seattle Seahawks radio broadcasts

Bob Hermes is last time I checked the General Manager, Station manager, and President for KPAX TV in Missoula (the home station) for the TV rights for the Griz games. Bob fancies him self as a Football expert. He also is one if not the leading force in the Little Griz program in Missoula. The little Griz program has a fall football program as well as summer camps for 5th to 8th graders. It is the main program for kids of that age range in Missoula to play football competitively. Now the teams in the Little griz Program are supposed to be picked at random and balanced, but an amazing thing always happens when the teams are announce every year. It seems that an extremely large number of the summer camp all stars always seems to make it on to Hermes's person team. I bring this up only because Bob take great pride in his coaching prowess, and to back this up he always point to the fact that over the past who knows how long his Little Griz teams have always dominated the league.
So I think you need to quit complaining , Bob has looked hi and low and quite frankly he can not find anyone who he feels is more qualified than himself to hire to do color.
BTW I worked with on a project with a very close relative of Bob's, and this relative could not stand to listen to his color commentary either!

You didn't originally say play by play, although that's what we've been talking about. I knew he'd been associated with the Hawks for longer than five years as I'd seen him associated with Hawks broadcasts during my 12 or so years in Seattle.GrizinWashington wrote:Raible has been play by play guy since 2004, less than 5 years:

And I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks Grady's a homer. You can go ahead and think that if it makes you feel better.
Anyway this thread was origianlly about Hermes. Go figure how we got here

That plays a big part of it, but the parents in Missoula raise their kids to be victims and the kids are very soft because of it. It's kind of hard to not be agressive and play football well.crazycat wrote:Wellmslacat wrote:Bob Hermes

Well. Looks like you've discovered why high school football in Missoula sucks. Each team gets pounded by 40 points a game all year. Good job Hermes, you're little Griz program is really producing.

Another reason that the Missoula schools struggle to be competitive in football, is simply that they are the 3 smallest AA schools, if I'm not mistaken. Now that Kalispell has 2 schools, they are probably pretty comparable, but I am certain that Kalispell and Missoula are the 5 smallest. The 3 Billings schools are almost twice as large as the 3 in Missoula, and I believe that in football, probably even more than most other sports, sheer numbers are a pretty significant factor. I looked this up once on the MHSA website, just out of curiosity, and I remember being surprised by the enrollment numbers.AlphaGriz1 wrote:That plays a big part of it, but the parents in Missoula raise their kids to be victims and the kids are very soft because of it. Missoula HS football has always sucked, that's just the way it is. GF is the football capital of Montana, everyone knows thatJohn K wrote:Another reason that the Missoula schools struggle to be competitive in football, is simply that they are the 3 smallest AA schools, if I'm not mistaken.
