Post by RickRund » Mon Jan 02, 2023 8:49 pm

Made contact, then collapsed, given CPR and then taken to the hospital. Damar Hamlin.

Game has been suspended.

I've never seen anything like that. He made a tackle that wasn't even a particularly big hit. Got up off the ground, stood for a moment, then just collapsed. Within a minute or so, trainers were administering CPR on the field!

Prayers up for this young man. Sure hope he pulls through this.

I was glad to see the NFL cancel the game.

Yes, wasn't really much contact. When I think about the collison during the Tulane/USC game today. I believe it was that game, severe helmet to helmet, and then this seemingly mild contact. You just never know. Praying for that young man.

Saw/heard a report that his vital signs are back to normal. He is being kept sedated. Still critical.

I wonder if this is what happened to this player? Commotio Cordis - StatPearls - NCBI Bookshelf https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK526014/

That is the thought from Dr Marc Siegel this morning.

Very scary but it sounds like a freak accident that can potentially happen to any player in any sport. I believe this is the same thing that has happened to baseball players in the past getting hit in the chest by a thrown or batted ball. Thank goodness this happened at an NFL game where you've got huge amounts of medical support immediately available, otherwise this would likely have been a different outcome.

I'm somewhat skeptical of this. In football, at all levels, in play and in practice, there are so many hits to the chest, It just seems that if hitting a guy at just the right moment in time that we would see several of these a year.

I think there must be some underlying factor that is unknown or undetected that happened here. I have known a few people that seemed pretty healthy, in the prime of life and just had a heart attack for some reason.

Sometime sh!t happens, and we just don't know why.

Yes, having emergency personnel right there probably saved his life.

Its so weird this happened on such a routine-looking tackle. If thats all it takes to stop someone's heart, you would think we'd see this a lot more often in football. I've never seen it before. I wonder if perhaps he had some underlying heart condition that nobody knew about? no idea. Just hope the guy recovers fully.

Oops, didn't see this. Looks like we're thinking the same thing.

Nice story by Ashley there. I might bump this over to the main football page to get some more views. We are really unique and lucky to have such a close partnership with Bozeman Health.

Also, interesting that Vigen was at that game.

His breathing tube has been removed. He is talking to his family.

Game will not be completed.

This is incredible news! Breathing on his own now, and from what I read, no brain/neurological damage which is almost unbelievable after needing CPR for 9 minutes.
