MSU PRESS RELEASE

April in Bozeman is nothing less than finicky but that has rarely been a roadblock for Montana State Track and Field, but it didn't damper anything as the MSU Open kicked off the brief home slate for the Bobcats, as the first of two home meets this spring. MSU was joined by Carroll, Eastern Washington, Montana and MSU Billings on Saturday.

On Thursday and Friday, the Bobcats participated in the decathlon and heptathlon as a soft opening to the meet. Montana's Lindsey Hall won the heptathlon with a score of 5,424. Back from a year of redshirting is Carley McCutchen who came in second place with a Big Sky Qualifying score of 4,891. Danielle Muri also punched her ticket with a third place finish score of 4,575.

MSU earned an impressive sweep over Eastern Washington and Montana in the scored portion of the meet.Combined, the Bobcats finished with 274 points, while Montana had 246 and Eastern with 139. The women's team got some satisfying revenge over their rival school with a 137-114 win against the Griz, following a loss in Missoula just one week ago.

Amidst snowy conditions prior to the start of the meet on Saturday, MSU took comfort at their home facility and knocked out a win right away in the men's javelin with Tanner Gambill's throw measuring 207-10 (63.34m). Gambill's throw was his second PR in as many weeks and could potentially give him the lead spot in the Big Sky rankings.

Both the men and women took gold in the 4x100 relays, picking up season best times, as well. The men's quartet, led off by Rory Bauer, followed by Nick Melone, Michael Tobin and Chris Wilson at the anchor, clocked a time of 41.16. The women's group of McCutchen, Iris Hardarson, Paige Squire and Chantel Jaeger, confidently held off a strong Montana relay to finish almost a full second ahead of their rival, with a time of 47.67.

Casey Teska rebounded from a tough first week of outdoor pole vaulting, to get back in the win column with a first place finish height of 12-03.75 (3.75m). While they didn't place, Amy Rovira and Sami Risa had huge outings tying for fourth place with 11-03.75 (3.45m) for season best heights.

The men's 1500 belonged to the Bobcats with a one-two finish from Matthew Tex and Grant Grosvenor, last year's 800 Big Sky champion and runner-up. Both finished inside the Big Sky qualifying times, which they both had earned prior to the MSU Open. Tex finished in 3:54.78, while Grosvenor earned the come-from-behind second place finish with 3:56.55.

The women's 1500 produced near identical results when this year's distance dynamic duo of Heather Demorest and Jenette Northey took first and second, respectively. Demorest crossed the line in 4:43.58 and Northey in 4:46.75.

Although she picked up a hearty season best, and a second place finish, her time of 14.69 marks a lifetime best in the 100 hurdles. Chelsea Bourque came in third in 15.18.

Amber Amsbaugh, clearly no stranger to a first place finish, kept up her winning ways once again in the high jump. Amsbaugh defeated Montana's Lindsey Hall and Gwenn Abbott with a height of 5-05.00 (1.67m). Adessa Durglo improver her mark, as well, coming in fourth place with 5-03.00 (1.60m).

Earning his second consecutive 400 qualifier, Rory Bauer hustled to second place with a time of 48.48, yet another season best for MSU.

The other dynamic duo out on the track were speedsters Chris Wilson and Michael Tobin. Both took the familiar one-two podium position, as well as garnering two Big Sky automatic qualifiers. Wilson finished in 10.49, while Tobin finished in 10.77. They did the same thing in the 200, including a qualifier for Tobin with 21.72. Wilson qualified last week in the event and his time of 21.36 will most likely move him up in the ranks. To complete the 200, Nick Melone sealed the sweep off, placing third in 22.06, just .03 off the conference time.

Chantel Jaeger also had an outstanding day, continuing a tremendously strong junior season. The Yakima, Wash. native picked up two more first place finishes in both the 100 and 200. Notably, both performances garnered her Big Sky marks, as well. She won the 100 in 11.99 and the 200 in 24.33.

The fourth set of one-two finishes belonged to Iris Hardarson and Lierin Flanagan. Hardarson got gold with a time of 2:15.87, while Flanagan finished in 2:17.34.

Sean Ferriter got the win in the hammer throw with a distance of 193-10 (59.08m), a lifetime best for the thrower. Also of note, Ferriter had the opportunity to compete against former teammate David Phillips one more time, as Phillips competed unattached and placed second with 184-04 (56.20m).

Ryan Kropp launched himself to the Big Sky meet in the pole vault with a season best height of 15-05.00 (4.70m).

The men's triple jump was nothing but Blue and Gold when Matt Tokarz won, followed by Tanner Burgard in second and Kyler Felton in third. Tokarz catapulted to a jump of 44-04.75 (13.53m). Burgard's jump marks a lifetime best at 42-11.75 (13.10m). Felton measured 42-00.00 (12.80m).

"We really had a great day today," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "We all woke up a little nervous because of the weather, but I think the fact that this meet is on our home turf, really amped the kids up, not making mother nature a factor at all."

The Bobcats will begin two weeks of away meets on Friday, April 11 at the Utah Spring Classic, followed by the Innovation Invitational on Saturday, April 12, hosted by Weber State.
