2024 Transfer Portal

Post by MSU01 » Sun Mar 17, 2024 8:22 pm

The Transfer Portal for basketball officially opens tomorrow, so I thought it would be good to have a thread devoted to it to keep track of what will probably be a long list of outgoing and incoming transfers this year for MSU and around the Big Sky. One would assume that no men's players would declare until after their season ends, but it will be interesting to see if there's any activity on the women's side. KJ Limardo and Taylor Janssen both still have their Covid year to use if they want to.

On the Men's side, I'd be pretty surprised to see any of the guys from their regular rotation transfer out. All of them seem like they're at the right level in terms of athleticism.

Will help fill the void left by Robert Ford. Sounds like a good get. Had a lot of offers.

Love to see it, now let's get a replacement lined up for Big John Olmsted!

Some big transfers on the women's side today, PSU lost Esmeralda Morales and Sac lost Big Sky Freshman of the Year Summah Hanson.

This is such a funny post, and I completely agree with it. But what's funny is that if you watched the entire season of MSU basketball and then spent the last 2-3 weeks in a coma, you'd just say "John who?"

John Homestead. I think he was a character in Oregon Trail

I still hear his name and think it might be Nate Holmstadt's kid.

According to this site, Malea has entered the transfer portal.

That would be unfortunate, I thought Malea showed quite a bit of talent this year in her limited role. Perhaps with Natalie Picton's emergence as the starting PG and Dylan Philip hopefully returning from injury next year, she would just be a bit too far buried on the depth chart to want to stay here. Sort of like Kellen Tynes with the men, who would've sat behind Darius Brown and Robert Ford had he stayed at MSU but has instead been a 2-year starter with Maine.

This is surprising news. I guess the argument there is too much depth at the one makes the most sense. Still sorry to see her go as she seems to be a valuable part of the team, is a Montana kid and always played hard!

How stupid is it to open the transfer portal right in the middle of March Madness? What would it hurt to wait a few weeks for crying out loud? You have, what, more than 128 teams actively engaged in trying to get their teams ready to play in the Big Dance and you dump this on top of the coaches to deal with? Unbelievable!

I think it's going to kill the NIT if they don't change something. It's already a distant second as far as interest goes, but then you get teams that decline the invitations, partly because players want to get in the portal. There used to be a rule where the regular season champ of a conference got an automatic invite if they didn't qualify for the NCAA tournament, but they got rid of that (this year?) to guarantee two teams from the big six conferences. Well now suddenly those bigger schools aren't wanting to play, so they have to go way down the line to get their quota and you're getting some bad teams, just like we're seeing with the crappy bowl games. No wonder the CBI has the 304th ranked team in the country (Chicago St).

Looks like Mattie Olson is in the portal also.

So basically Sac State's whole bench entered the portal.

Well, with Mattie and Malea leaving and Madison timing out, I wouldn’t say we were overloaded at any guard position. That only leaves Philip, Berry and Picton as true guards — Limardo (?) and Bunyan are really 3-guards. Lots of opportunity for an incoming freshman, and I’d guess 1 transfer now. I think Taylee Chirrick’s arrival influenced the portal decisions as much as the current players. I think Malea really brought some skills, and Mattie Olson on paper was a top recruit — injuries are just devastating. 💙💛😺

Thinking of Sacramento State and Northern Colorado with seven players each leaving — it seems to be a cautionary tale about grabbing a disparate group of players and trying to create a team. How many are trying to transfer for a second time?
