New NCAA Transfer Rule

Post by mslacat » Wed Jun 13, 2018 11:41 am

Not sure if this is being posted in the Football section, but.......... I never go there from December-September

The NCAA just past a new transfer rule that could have an decent size impact on the college basketball landscape. The NCAA rules allow a player to seek a transfer without getting a coaches and/or Universities approval as to where that player goes and still receive a scholarship. This new rule takes effect October 15 of this year. Currently, if a player wants to transfer they must request a release from his coach/school. That release may have conditions on where that player may or may not seek to transfer too. Any school, by NCAA rule, that is listed on the release cannot offer that player an athletic scholarships for the following year. If a player did want to attend a school (like a his home town school) barred on the list he would have to sit out one year with no scholarship, no part of the team and then sit out a second year on scholarship for his transfer year. This gave the head coach, a lot of power about where a kid could transfer to, in some cases. As of October 15th a player may transfer at will anywhere they can find a scholarship.

There has been talk of a major NCAA change concerning player transfer for about a year now, and while this rule is definitely a move in the right direction it is not as big as it could have been. The NCAA as far as I can tell, has not changed the sitting out a year requirement after a transfer, like they were rumored to have been considering. When and if that rule is change it will be true free-agency in the NCAA.

Couple other notes on this rule change:

1 It stills allows conferences to impose there own stricter rules. The big one will most likely restrictions or banning of player transfer in conference.
2. The NCAA has raised the penalty for tampering with players to a top line offence.

History:
There are quite a number coaches out there that used to use their control of where a player could transfer without regard to what is best for the student athlete. Bobby Knight was one of the most famous of them. When he was coaching at Texas Tech he was very famous for cutting over 50% of his freshman class and recruiting over them the next year. When he cut a player he would prohibit them from signing with any conference schools, any schools who were on Texas Tech schedule in the following two (or more) year, any D-1 Texas school, any coaches/schools on a list that he did not like and finally Indiana. There was one player who Knight cut after his freshman year, because they were not getting along. He was a top 100 player in high school from Teaxs. He wanted to stay in Texas, he had a family member who was ill and was willing to o to a low end D-1 schools. His release though would not allow him. He appealed to Knight, to the University, and finally to the NCAA and Knight fought him tooth and nail. He lost all his appeals. He gave up basketball and a opportunity for a free scholarship.

at last, a way to get a big man - possibly before next season.

While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Those transfer waivers were a garbage rule. "You're a student first and then an athlete, but it's imperative that our basketball coach be able to tell you were you can and can't study, because reasons." Sure. How is that not transparently hypocritical and gross?

This is a step in the right direction.

Couldn't agree more. Jay Bilas had some great insight on this. Basically only professionals are under these types of restraints. But the NCAA continually refers to the athletes as amateurs. So if they are really amateur's...why are they restricted?
