Re: Moving Forward: Recruiting
Every year some guys that "aren't D1 talent" get offers and some (maybe only a few but maybe quite a few) of them turn out to have actually been or become D1 talent. At the same time some guys that are "D1 talent" turn out to not actually be D1 talent.Hawks86 wrote:Says the guy Colter talked to.duelalumnicat wrote:Says who?Hawks86 wrote:Lot of offers for guys that aren't D1 talent.
I don't know how these new recruits stack up today and no one knows how far they may develop. ( Well except for some guy in AZ who evidently knows so much more than anyone else including our new head coach.)

Re: Moving Forward: Recruiting
This post addresses in my own way much of the conversation that has taken place in this thread since Mr. Nuanez posted his conversation with the gentleman who follows Arizona high school basketball. There are a lot of points I want to talk about.
Fish’s recruiting in general
It is real tough to get a feeling on Brian Fish’s recruiting methods and evaluation skills based on what he has done in the past few weeks since he has been hired. Fish came on board a about 3 weeks ago and immediately had to fill at least three roster spots, with about 80% of the recruiting class of 2014 already signed or committed. Of those still available Fish had to try to find a way to make head way in three weeks to counter the 12 or more months his competing D-1 coaches had into recruiting them. What Fish is currently doing could be described as scramble recruiting. He spent quite few days on the phone talking with recruiting connections trying to dig up under recruited players who might be a little bit of a gamble but had big upsides. It is impossible to draw any big time conclusions, good or bad, about Fish long term goals and recruiting patterns from this springs recruiting process. We really need to hold off and let him and his coaches get 6-12 months of player evaluation, contact and recruiting under their belt, so they can sell the program and establish a beach head with the 2015 and beyond recruiting classes. Even still I think it will take at least 1 season going through the Big Sky conference until he gets a clear picture of what it will take to run his program. Still what I have seen in the past 3 weeks has been encouraging. Fish brought in his first two players for official visits and landed both, despite have other D-1 offers/trips scheduled I was pretty impressed by that, but no I don’t think he will keep that % intact for long.
Fish’s first Recruits
First I will admit I always tend to stay positive when I discuss recruits. ANY recruits even Griz recruits. This is especially true when discussing high school kids, I don’t like at all ripping in any way someone of this age. Good rule of thumb is when I don’t like something, I don’t talk about it. Second whenever possible I try to get quotes from real scouts (not architects) and post video of the athlete so you can make up your own mind. My preference is always post name, height, position, school, a little personal bio who else is recruiting them and maybe a comment or two about their basketball accomplishments and then let you make up your mind. Third I will fully admit there is a very good chance Colter’s source has seen more Arizona (especially if it is who I think it is) that is why I sought out other opinions that I posted above. Since reading Colter’s source I did a little bit more research both on the net and talking to folks in Arizona.
Arizona 2014 prospect Rankings: I found two pre-season rankings. Generally Green is considered to be the more highly rated of the two coming in from 16th-19th best recruits. Price ranks 22nd-25th.
Are either or both D-1 Prospects. I know for a fact last week Northern Colorado offered Zach Green and asked him not to commit anywhere until after taking an official visit there (which they were trying to set up). Quinn Price was offered last week also by North Dakota and an official visit was being scheduled. Furthermore if you read Gidals piece in the Bozeman Chronicle today
http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/sp ... 963f4.html
Gidal listed multiple other D-1 offers by d-1 schools for both guys. While recruiting is always a little bit of a gamble, generally when multiple D-1 programs are offering a kid I think it is fair to call him a D-1 prospect.
I talked to Chad Groth of Areacodes Basketball who covers the Arizona basketball scene in extensively as well as a few others. All of the people I have talked to believe these guys are solid Big Sky caliber player. At worse they felt both players could be solid role players down the line, but all think they have a big upside. Green might be the most ready to play D-1 right away he has the athleticism muscle and size right now but needs to see how continues to develop. Price has a bigger upside. He has the size and athleticism that makes him unique in the Big Sky. His defense and rebounding are more developed for the D-1 game than his offence. He needs to put on some muscle (205lbs) and develop his post-game to go along with his jump shot.
Overall I find it hard to criticize Fish at all for what he has done in a short three weeks. He could have chased after a bunch of middle tier JC guys to help right away but he went after and LANDED his two top priority high school recruits. They may not be as D-1 ready as potential JC guys but down the road they may pay big dividends. Next year at this time it will be real interesting to see what Fish and his coaches can do with a full year of recruiting under their belt.

I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.

Yea, I have a bad problem with some anonymous person in AZ bad-mouthing kids high school age.
If this "source" is not willing to completely disclose who he is and why his opinion counts for anything,
then I couldn't care less what the guy says.
We have a new coach and he and his staff are doing what they can to turn this program around.
The last thing I'm interested in is negative gossip before we even get a chance to get started.

Re: Moving Forward: Recruiting
I continue to hear Fish and Haslam full expect both to show up for summer classes in June. I am about 99.9% sure Bradly Fisher will be here. About 75% Bigby-Williams will be here. The reason I rate Bigby-Williams less is that I continue to hear other D-1 schools are interested and continue to contact his coach (they can not contact him).CatBlitz wrote:Thanks mslacat.

For what it's worth, I've researched these two recruits and they are both good gets. Quinn Price is your average Big Sky recruit, a good player with a deficiency. For him, it's that he's very thin and he got injured his senior year. But he had a slew of Division I interest and another Big Sky offer.
Green could be a gem. Watching his film, he's excellent at finishing in the lane. He fell off Pac 12 radars because of a broken leg, but he's a volume scorer who can slash, handle the rock and get to the free throw line. If he doesn't break his leg, Montana State has no chance of getting him. He's a good pick up.

As long as no other players defect. one scholarship. My guess Fish will use it to sign a JC power forward leading candidate (my opinion) 6-7 Torin Washingtonhardhatcat wrote:So with the two new recruits and bigby and fisher what is left for scholarships

Re: Moving Forward: Recruiting
Great post mslacat!! What I don't understand is why Colter would even post that crappy post ridiculing the new Cats based on what some unnamed loser in Arizona said to him about their ability. How do you suppose these guys would feel if they read such crap? (Probably no better than Colter would feel if someone made nasty, vitriolic anonymous statements about his writing ability!!) In the future I hope that everyone keeps their mouth shut and gives recruits a chance to prove if they are D-1 talent before they put such negative junk on this site! Welcome to Montana State guys, we are damn glad to have you!!!!

Who knows? The AZ recruiting insider/guru could be right. The tone of his message made it sound like he has an ax to grind either with MSU or Huse or the AZ prep coach though. If he wants to be taken seriously as an evaluator of D1 talent, he needs to steer away from sounding like that.

Re: Moving Forward: Recruiting
At least one recruit will be coming in this week arriving today and leaving Friday. His name is Torin Washington and he is a 6-7 power forward from McHenry Community College. He averaged 15 points 11 rebounds this past season, by the end of the season was ranked #73 at the end of the season (#98 preseason). He is one of those JC players who was recruited to the JC for his size and athleticism but blossomed into a force in college. His strongest suit is his rebounding and has a knack for getting to the ball, this year his score came along. He has taken two official visits already one to Chicago State (he is from Chicago) and the other is Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is the other. Missouri State is also interested and has set up a visit in the future. Montana State was considered to be his favorite but Missouri State has come into the picture late and appears to be in the picture. Montana State has been recruiting him since Huse (Chris Haslam was the assistant in charge of his recruiting). Washington is a very athletic player who is just now reaching his potential.
I am going to be real interested in seeing if Fish can land him this week-end. Not just because it would be nice to bolster our front line, but based on what I heard about Price and Green's recruitment, they came in some what skeptical but Fish blew their socks off with his energy and optimism about the Bobcat program. I will be real curious to see how Fish does recruiting a little older guy and can he close the deal like he did with Price and Green. If so could be a real positive for the Bobcat's recruiting moving forward.

I'm particularly intrigued by Green. He's got a nice, quick release and good hops for a 6'5 kid. Price is long and is probably still growing.
