Dual sport college athletes

Post by AFCAT » Thu Feb 01, 2024 1:49 pm

I saw in the Bobcat collective interview a few days ago that Andrew Powdrell will be running track this Spring. We don't see many college athletes playing two sports these days. I seem to remember some wide receivers, before the Choate era, that also ran track but I can't recall a name.

Does anyone remember some dual sport Bobcat athletes in the past 20 years or so?

Chris Wilson
Jobman-but I think he rodeoed after he was done with football
There were some other track guys, but I can’t remember.

Lamont Bell and Shaun Ross both were on the track team in late 90s early 00s.

Beau Clark, but he didn't rodeo for MSU while he was playing football. He has been to at least one NFR for steer wrestling.

Wasn't there a skier who also punted a bit? Was he a dual sport athlete?

Yeah 🤣 I think he might’ve been a kicker tho. Some Jon Stinarood guy.

Right right right....I knew it was one of those kicky punty "football" positions. I hope everything turned out okay for him. He seemed like a nice enough guy.

Doing well. He got a job handling out the AFC championship trophy.

JC Murray, football and track. JC was a BSC Champ in shot put '95. Shawn Ross was All-BSC (top 3 finish in an event at BSC) three times in track, weight throw, shot, discus, 2001-2002. I can think of many others, but JC and Sean were prominent in both sports and played four years of football. Both were team captains in football. I remember Shawn needing time for his hands to recover after football season.

Lonnie Burt played football and was a wrestler, in 1985 and I think before that too. He was all conference at both.

Big Sky Lonnie Burt. Cat/griz wrestling meets in those days were amazing. Both teams were on the ragged edge of the top 25 in the nation.

Yeah, I’ve written about this on here in the past. I was at the state championship in Helena when Lonnie overcame huge odds and took down the reigning state heavyweight champion, Gary Albright. Albright was a stud who only lost twice in his high school career and went on to wrestle at Nebraska. Burt had already lost to Albright twice that year and NOBODY thought he would defeat Albright but he managed to get ahead in the match and rode Albright over the last few minutes to victory, winning 6-5. Probably the most exciting wrestling match I ever saw.

When I read the headline I was hoping it was about Kellen Harrison coming to MSU for football and basketball.
