#43 Idaho State FCS Football-2019 Preview (Bengals)
#7 Big Sky
https://www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/17622

Finished just out of the top 25 (32ish) last year in the STATS poll, out of the top 25 in the CSM poll, and #20 in the Hero poll.

Partial excerpt:
The Bottom Line:
As always, the margin for error in the Big Sky will be razor thin and the Bengals could once again see the playoffs as being just out of reach. The non-conference slate includes games against Utah, Northern Iowa and BYU. Trips to Montana and Weber State will be extremely difficult as well. If Idaho State cannot win any of those contests, they have to win every other game on the schedule, which would include trips to Idaho and Southern Utah and a home date against Eastern Washington.

ISU could be interesting to watch this year. They have a ton of experience coming back...17 seniors and 17 juniors, most of whom have seen major duty. Several all-conference and most Kramer recruits.
If they can compete well in Utah....games in Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo and Cedar City it could prove a bonus for recruiting. The Pocatello-Idaho Falls area is rich in LDS.
Like the Bobcats they have a former standout college wide receiver as OC/QB coach. Mike Ferriter is a former griz. And like MSU they need a quarterback. Departed Tanner Gueller threw for over 9,000 yards and 74 touchdowns.

They weren’t the 11th best FCS team last year. The Ivy’s need to do something like play a couple CAA teams every year if they want to be taken seriously.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

I agree. I'll even go further, I think if they're not going participate in the tournament they shouldn't be included as part of the FCS. Might as well call them I-AA.

I have to agree Rich - they are separatists by choice and we should honor that choice fully. As far as where they really ranked last year, i will leave that up to people such as Craig Haley and Sam Herder (btw, Hero had them finishing the season at #4), so maybe we should hit them up to weigh in about their inclusion or exclusion.

When was the last time we played San Diego? Seems like it would be a good opportunity to play a team that regularly makes the playoffs and is in California. We could put together a home and home where we go there in a year when we don't have an in-conference trip to CA.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

When one backs away from our myopic viewpoint and truly examines the absolute chaos in our region's sports conferences, I contend we have no room whatsoever questioning the Ivy League's decision to not participate in the small college farce of a playoff.

The turmoil (and absurdity of a 13 team league) that counts as former members Boise State, Gonzaga and Nevada and let's not even discuss the "leadership" of Idaho and subject our present teams to an unbalanced schedule with conference teams such as Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Portland State, Cal Poly--among others--and soon we'll see teams such as Central Washington, Dixie State...

If we look at the membership of the WAC, Mountain West, WCC and even the PAC 12, with all the bouncing from one conference to another, I'd appreciate the relative stability within the Ivies rather than complain about their decision to not waste a lot of athletic revenue on the joke of small college playoffs...you know, those games played after the regular season that our Class C State Championship game in all probability has a larger crowd than most of the playoff games have.

*Plus, hardly any of our high school DJs play any Neil Diamond crap...

Haley's response:
It doesn’t matter, but he is wrong. The Ivy teams play very weak non conference competition year in and year out. Play a strong OOC schedule and earn your ranking. Beating up on Patriot League and NEC teams doesn’t cut it. The bottom half of the Ivy is really bad.

Don't the SWAC and MEAC teams, that aren't conference champs, have the option to play in the playoffs if they are chosen as an at large team?

#37 McNeese State FCS Football-2019 Preview (Cowboys)
#5 Southland
https://www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/17642

Finished 2018 outside all three polls: Stats, CSM, and Hero.
McNeese missed the playoffs in 2017 with a 9-2 record. Last year it looked like they would make up for it following a 5-1 start. But then they went to Incarnate Word and got crushed 45-17. They never really recovered from that and finished a very disappoint 6-5. That cost Lance Guidry the head coaching job...

36 East Tennessee State FCS Football-2019 Preview (Buccaneers)
#5 SoCon
https://www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/17645

Finished 2018 outside of the STATS and Hero polls, and at #21 in the CSM poll.
East Tennessee State reached the playoffs for the first time since their return to the college football world in 2015. The Buccaneers have been building quickly and Coach Randy Sanders moved them over the top and into the playoffs. Once there, ETSU lost in their opener to Jacksonville State, but for now getting to that point is a great stepping stone.
