I think 30 sacks is a very achievable goal. Especially if we play 13 or 14 games. There are a number of guys that could get 5+

Thanks for doing this. Love numbers and charts. 2011 was notable in that the highest sack rate paired with the least plays defended per game, which indicates that the sacks were helping to get the defense off the field on third down — which totally makes sense. We've had less sacks lately and have struggled on third down. So bring 'em on. Let the big ‘Cats eat.
My pleasure. Me when I find out people do this for a living:

I would think that turnovers have some influence on this number. Back in 2011, maybe we had some turnovers against offenses that try to grind down the clock. Without examining play-by-play data it's impossible to know if the sacks are coming from defensive strength / weakness, opponents' offensive proficiency (or lack of), turnovers, anything else, etc.

But I do think it's a nice birds eye view that gives us an idea of what's going on and where we need to go. Even with only three data points under Choate, there appears to be an inverse correlation between plays run per sack and wins. I think if we can get that number under 30 we'll be at or very near the top of the standings.

He used to grab guys and then do a spin move and just drill them into the ground.

You know you're in trouble when the guy sacking you is getting his hips and back into it. This is that form only guys from Montana have, which comes from scraping the sh-- out of your windshield on icy mornings.

You can't throw the QB into the ground like that.

You have to assist them slowly to the ground, provide a pad, and a pillow. Similar to helping a elderly person into bed.

I'm not nitpicking on this but this is not throwing the qb to the ground, it is bulldogging him down. I'm just questioning id this is really illegal?

In the NFL, yes. Not sure about college.

Yes. I would be willing to bet 95% of the time that gets flagged for unnecessary roughness. However, I did a quick search and per the rule, maybe that technically isn't illegal to slam the QB to the ground even though I know the game had migrated more towards protecting the QBs. Any officials on here care to weigh in? Now I'm curious.

Situational. Does the R feel that the QB is being forced to the ground? If so then yes it is UNR. Does the R feel that the act happened as part of the tackle? Then clean. You can see it going both ways on a play like that and both can be correct
