Biggest plays in MSU history
Since it’s the off-season I thought a thread on this might help pass the time.
1) Joe Roberts INT return vs Rhode Island in 1984 semis.
2) The Stuff vs UM in 2018
3) Blocked XP vs New Hampshire to win first round playoff game in 1976.
4) Jesse Jones screen pass and run from Kelly Bradley vs Boise State in 1984.
5) Steven Bethley’s blocked XP vs New Hampshire in second round playoff game in 2011.
6) Travis Lulay to Junior Adams TD pass vs UM in 2002.
7) Onside kick recovered by Corey Smith vs NAU in 2003.
8- Paul Schafer game-winning TD run vs UM with 12 seconds to go in 1968.
9) Corey Smith game-opening KO return for TD vs UM in 2003.
10) Mike Rider tackles WSU’s Bo Bolen on 4th-goal from 1 w/20 seconds to go in 2009.

Not necessarily Top Ten worthy, but I'd also include:
- Murray pass to Sullivan on 4th and short with 1 min left vs. UM 2016
- Thomas pass breakup on 4th down vs. UM 2017
- Murray pass to Sullivan on 4th and short with 1 min left vs. UM 2016

Great list! I think #6 should be a little higher, and I think the Murray to Sullivan pass in 2016 is top-10 worthy, as HC95 said.iaafan wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 9:59 amSince it’s the off-season I thought a thread on this might help pass the time.

Re: Biggest plays in MSU history
The Les Lenniger interception would be my number 2 (Joe Roberts interception would be one). Last conference game of the year. We are tied with NAU for first. Winner gets the playoff bid. We are up 10-0 (I believe) and NAU has the ball on about our 40 with a few seconds left. They throw into the end zone incomplete but a PI call gives them one more (untimed) play from our 25. Les breaks through, blocks the throw, catches it and rumbles (Les ran about a 5.2 40) 70 yards for the score changing the whole dynamics of the game. The NAU QB caught Les at about the 5 and they both fell into the end zone. We went to the playoffs because of that play.

I'm not familiar with the play. How long ago was it?gtapp wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 10:25 amThe Les Lenniger interception would be my number 2 (Joe Roberts interception would be one). And were we up by 10 with a few seconds left in the game? Doesn't seem like a very big play then. Or was it right before halftime?

Just before half. The played changed the momentum of the game. I believe it was 78. I was there but my mind is not what it used to be.kennethnoisewater wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 10:28 amI'm not familiar with the play. Re: Biggest plays in MSU history
Not the biggest but does anyone remember the fake punt Lulay did in Cat/Griz in Missoula for like a beautiful 45 yard TD?

The Joe Roberts interception needs to be memorialized by a statue at the stadium. I got to witness that play in person.

Didn't Brad Daly have back to back sacks on 3rd and 4th down in our playoff game against Stony Brook to close out the game?

Re: Biggest plays in MSU history
Yes. It was a perfect pass, into decent coverage. I think Gatewood ended breaking the Cat/Griz receiving record that game, something like 230 yards. We got smoked of course.

Yes, of course. Using the phrase in the context of something already well known, more matter-of-factly, because if you know what game this occured in you know the outcome. Not in the way you would to describe something that isn't surprising, which I assume is how you took it.

I still don’t get what you mean. Oh well. Gatewood had 235 yards that day. MSU was 6-2, but lost at SAC and then in OT to EWU, but made the playoffs the previous two years and the next year beating UM in each of those years.CelticCat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 1:38 pmYes, of course. I believe what he's trying to say is that even though that play was great and Gatewood's performance was even better, we still got smoked in the game. The "of course" part was because we already know that, because the game has already been played.iaafan wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 1:46 pmI still don’t get what you mean. Oh well. Re: Biggest plays in MSU history
How about Les in the 76 championship game. He got mvp and his interview lasted about 5 seconds. Essentially " you get out there and run your ass off".

Yes, thank you. There are several uses of the phrase of course so I suppose it is a confusing one to type out without hearing it spoken.Bobcat80 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 2:54 pmI believe what he's trying to say is that even though that play was great and Gatewood's performance was even better, we still got smoked in the game. If I wanted to use it with a negative connotation, I would have said "we got smoked because of course we did."
