Capital is very young this year. Tough game at Flathead this week.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

But they just haven't been the same for at least 5 years. CHS used to be in the title game about every other year. What's happened?

Capital was running the zone read before most people even knew what it was. I remember interviewing Marc Sampson a number of years ago and he told me a great story about going to a coaching clinic and sitting in on a lecture from a young coach from Bowling Green who proposed running the veer option out of the spread. That coach, Urban Meyer, has risen to pretty high heights because of his offensive principles.

The first varsity action I got as a sophomore for Missoula Big Sky was in the first round of the 2002 playoffs against Kyle Sampson, Marc's son and now the head coach at Flathead, and the No. 1 Bruins. Never knew who had the ball for a single second of that game. Mystifying. The point is, the offensive innovation combined with Capital's ridiculous string of defensive talent — Greg Carouthers, Andy Petek, the Daly brothers to name a few — made them an absolute powerhouse. When Marc Samson went to MSU Northern, Capital has had a hard time getting back to that level, although they did have another mini dynasty when Caleb Kidder, Matt Miller and Gunnar Brekke.

You may have been thinking of Jason Crebo instead of Andy Petek. Both no. 37 for Griz when they played.

Sort of a mini dynasty....3 out of 4 years champion with Matt Miller. Beaten in Miller's senior year by Jake Bleskin who was a junior at CMR. Miller had a pulled hamstring in that game. The previous 3 years he dominated the championship game. Brekke was on later teams.

Crebo played for Jim Tuss. His senior year was one of the best teams CHS ever fielded, but they lost in the state title game to CMR and Ryan Leaf. It was, IMO, Capital's day to have a bad day. Crebo, Jason Grovom, Aaron Horpestad, Kevin Johnson to name a few. Crebo was the second best player to come out of Helena next to Pat Donovan in my opinion and the best LB in UM history. Would've started at any PAC 10 school. Better LB than Leaf was a QB.

I don't recall Capital running much zone read when Sampson first got there. He had the legendary Tyler Emmert at QB, but maybe they did.

Agree with you regarding Crebo. I was baffled when he decided not to enter the draft. He would have been just like Sean Lee of the Cowboys. Same type of LB
