Re: BOOM 8/8
Looks like the David Hayward from Monte Vista (Calif.). If so he's a 6-4, 235 OT. He has interest from NAU, SAC and UTEP.

I look at this and think, holy smokes, this kid has to put on at least 50 pounds to play the position. Is that correct? How long does it take to do that?

Mike Person played at 265ish as a freshman, I think. John Weidenaar played at about the same weight as a freshman, and he was 2-4 inches taller (meaning less bulk, less muscle mass, and a higher center of gravity, all disadvantages in the trenches). That same year, the other tackle was Steven Foster, and I think he was also about 265, the center was 265ish Shaun Sampson, and 265ish Quinn Catalano ended up starting most of the games at guard. To be fair, it's easier to play at that weighed when you're 6' even like Sampson was.Long Time Cat wrote: ↑Mon Oct 15, 2018 11:27 pmI look at this and think, holy smokes, this kid has to put on at least 50 pounds to play the position. So, I'd say he only has to gain 30 pounds if he's either an NFL-type athlete (like Person and Big John) or a very sound technical blocker with a big nasty streak (like Sampson, Catalano, and Foster). Barring that, you're probably right.
As for how long it takes an o-line recruit to go from 235-285, there's one poster here who would say 5-10 years, because you can only gain 5-10 pounds in a year without PEDs. Is that Hi Line who says that? Anyway, outside of agenda-driven opinions, it could take 2 years or it could take 4. Or it could be that he just can't get up that high. A lot of it depends on genetics. I don't know if Hayward plays basketball (it's almost a given that a 6-4 in-state recruit would, unless he wrestles) or plays any other sports, but he can get a head start on bulking up if he doesn't cut weight for other sports after football season is over.

You can gain 5-10 pounds of muscle. Lineman don't have to gain all muscle like the other positions. Jeez if you're gonna pick on a guy get it right...blueandgoldblitz wrote: ↑Tue Oct 16, 2018 8:51 amgtapp says thatBLACKnBLUEnGOLD wrote: ↑Tue Oct 16, 2018 2:26 amLong Time Cat wrote: ↑Mon Oct 15, 2018 11:27 pmI look at this and think, holy smokes, this kid has to put on at least 50 pounds to play the position. looks like 235 was his Junior year weight and he has put some more on since then, and I would imagine will come into fall camp around 245-250.technoCat wrote: ↑Tue Oct 16, 2018 8:59 amYou can gain 5-10 pounds of muscle. I don't doubt gtapp's expertise, but I do know myself -- when I came out of HS, signed with MSU, I was 6'1" and 172 lbs. I had never lifted a weight as a skill player in HS. Rocky Gullickson (sp?) got a hold of me/us through summer, winter, into spring of my RS frosh year. I checked out of spring ball at 6'2" and 198 lbs. I did not use PED's, HGH, steroids, anything of the sort, just trusted the process and program. I went from 15% body fat (we didn't measure BMI back then) to 8%, which means to me my weight gain was muscle mass, and that showed. My 40 time was about the same (4.6), my vertical went up about 4". I was a late bloomer, still growing at 17-18, and I think that is common. I have always taken gtapp's assessment with a grain of salt based solely on my own experience, I know I gained 25 pounds of muscle in a year, the right way.

Not that he can't be successful at the OL position, but I wonder if he is athletic enough to stay between 230-250 and play TE? In his above picture, he LOOKS like he has a TE frame.
just a thought, I have not watched his highlights or anything.

Kid is going to make a tremendous offensive lineman. Great get for the coaching staff.

2nd rated OT in the FCS according to 247. Still really early in the process but gotta like that anyway.

Not that hard to do. He’ll probably get to campus at around 250-260. Redshirt, get to at least 280. From there, you just see what the body will do. Obviously ideal if you can get him to 300+, but not necessary.Long Time Cat wrote: ↑Mon Oct 15, 2018 11:27 pmI look at this and think, holy smokes, this kid has to put on at least 50 pounds to play the position. OL who weigh 300 or so coming out of HS, and that can move well aren’t coming to MSU. They’re going Power 5. I prefer to take smaller, athletic guys and bulk them up. Technique and athleticism can make up for a lot of “strength” or weight deficiencies. Shaun Sampson was one of the better centers in the Big Sky in his career and he was 260 dripping wet, but he had absolutely flawless technique.
This kid looks like he should be able to play OG or OT pretty well. Would guess OT.

OL is a position where Choate has thrived recruiting.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:07 amKid is going to make a tremendous offensive lineman. Great get for the coaching staff.

But by the time Kidd, Tuiasosopo, and Sessions are seniors, the line is going to be talented, experienced, and deep.

Can we blame Choate for that? I don’t know any details, maybe you do.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:31 am*cough*cough* Donny Long *cough*cough*bobcat99 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:28 amOL is a position where Choate has thrived recruiting.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:07 amKid is going to make a tremendous offensive lineman. But Wood (whom I wasn’t high on), Redd, Hatten, McElroy, McKnight in addition to those guys. It’s a talented room.

Joking of course as you can't really predict a kid being homesick after a few weeks away from home (unless you are taking Bob Stitt's 60 questions of excellence). I have never been concerned about Choate's recruitment of OL/DL.bobcat99 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:35 amCan we blame Choate for that? The majority of lineman fall into two categories: guys who would be 240 without football, and guys who would be 440 without football. The best lineman who have come through Bozeman have all looked like TEs when they were in high school.mslacatfan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 16, 2018 10:01 amNot that he can't be successful at the OL position, but I wonder if he is athletic enough to stay between 230-250 and play TE? Not sure if David is still a on board. His Twitter is now showing West Point commit?
