On paper, our defense will be better. I think with the talent we brought in at DE and the secondary, we should be able to play a style of defense that actually creates plays and turnovers this year. Last year we knew we couldn't get to the CB so we just kept everything in front of us. I think we can be more aggressive this year, which should result in some big plays.

As for the QB position, there is no way we will be worse passing the ball, but that doesn't mean we will be effective. Losing two excellent runners in Murray and LaSane certainly hurts, but let me put it this way - we led the conference in rushing and teams knew we couldn't throw the ball. Having a mobile QB, even if not as mobile as Murray, who can still execute the option but who is actually a passing threat seems like it would only open up the running game more.

WR is unproven but last year we could've had an All-American cast out there and it wouldn't have made much of a difference. Still have to have a QB who can get you the ball.

RB to me is my only real question mark. There appears to be talent there but like you said, not much experience. I wish we had LaSane this year.

With Andersen and Jonsen on the field at the same time BSC DCs are going to have their hands full. Could be the most athletic combo in the conference.

I agree with all points and think we'll be ok in all these areas. Troy and/or Travis will still be part of the running game at QB and Troy is good enough with his arm to give us an effective passing game when used to keep defenses off balance - we don't have to blow anyone away with our passing game if we are no longer a one dimensional team. We also have both speed and power in the running game, but don't have a proven every down type of back as of yet if Troy is not back there, but Ifanse has the size/speed/vision, and is showing well in fall ball as well as Sumner is too.

My biggest concern, a others have said is our field goal and extra point kicking games. With coach Choate's preferred method of play and a strong defense, we will be in most games but could continue to lose games by 3-6 points over and over. He has been an excellent recruiter but we have not seen that in the point kicking game as of yet.

100% agree. Lets all hope that when we hit 10:00 pm Thursday August 30th we will know just what kind of kicking game, and for that matter what kind of overall team we have. Until then my biggest concern is the kicking game, and would like nothing more than to know we have that covered after the Gold Rush Game.

I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised at the QB play in the passing game.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bailey only kicks the longer FGs if he continues to struggle with accuracy. Byrne was 2-3 from 30 yards on Saturday and looks pretty capable. We could see a 2 kicker situation where Bailey kicks the 40+ yarders and Byrne kicks the under 40s. Choate isn't going to mess around when game time comes. He'll do whatever he needs to make sure we are converting all the points we can this year.

Choate also sounded optimistic that Hill could return late in the season from back surgery in yesterday's post practice media session. Maybe just coach speak but that would be a huge boost for the defense late in the year.

I didn't hear Choate as "optimistic" about Hill, more hopeful that he could return. I am not sure what will happen with our best LB, but if he can't come back, that is a definite blow to the D!

Losing Hill is only a blow to the D if there’s no one good to replace him. MSU is loaded st LB, so it isn’t.

He’s struggling with accuracy? How did you determine that?

Hill without a doubt is our best linebacker and anytime you lose your best player at a certain position it affects the unit as a whole.

Well he missed attempts from 44 and 50 in the scrimmage last Saturday. And by all accounts from spring through fall camp he has a huge leg but is erratic at times. Doesn't matter if he can kick it from 60 if he can't put it through the uprights.

Don't you think Bailey could also go 2-3 from 30 yards? He just didn't get the opportunity in the scrimmage. His tries were 15 and 20 yards farther.

Yes, it could raise their level of play. Either way it isn’t a huge drop off.

I’ve never seen anything about him being erratic in camp. How do you know those two misses in the scrimmage were his fault?

I hope he could, but we didn't get him to be able to kick 30 yarders.

I'm gonna be in town tomorrow and was wondering what time practice starts? I want to get a look at these warlocks at the QB position so I can make my final prediction on starter for game one.

Anybody on here a member at Black Bull, if so is the course in good shape this summer? I may or may not get to play it tomorrow!

That should do it, thanks in advance.
