Interception Record
I've been looking around on the MSU website trying to find season records, especially for intereceptions. Can somebody help me with a link?
My thoughts are that one place that pressure on the QB will show up statistically is in interceptions. It won't be hard to get more than last year. (5??? for the whole team for season )
Long defensive arms and plenty of pressure on opponent's quarterbacks have me being very optimistic that we'll get plenty of picks this year.

Re: Interception Record
I believe Morgan Ryan holds the individual record at 22 over his career. He played in the early 90s. I'm not sure what the season individual or team record is.Rich K wrote:I've been looking around on the MSU website trying to find season records, especially for intereceptions. Re: Interception Record
I think Doug Kimball had 9 INT's in 1984, thinking that was a season record at that time (so many of those were off deflections, Doug was always around the ball and had great corners in Holland, Johnson, and DA)
I've been known to have faulty memory though

Re: Interception Record
It would appear from the list we had 2 Doug Kimball's on the team at the same time.

I'm impressed how Kimball had more interceptions in 2 years than 3...

Re: Interception Record
He is the only one on the list I've seen and yes they avoided him. I feel like in the last 20 years we've had good corners but not across the board so they could avoid them. Or you had guys like Walker that seemed to focus on knocking the ball down instead of intercepting it.77matcat wrote:Thanks!!!

Re: Interception Record
You are correct in that they straight up didn't target JT's side of the field too often.technoCat wrote:He is the only one on the list I've seen and yes they avoided him. INTs have been a problem for a while, or even just takeaways in general.

Which begs the question, "what happened to the Media Guide" which contains nearly everything you would want to know about Bobcat Football? I'm sure it's still published and contains just about everything you'd care to know about Bobcat Football. The MSU Athletic website used to provide a link, but no more. It still should.

a majority of those guys on the INT leader board are safties, some were ball hawks. when you have a cover corner like JT, a good safety will know where the QB tendencies will be (overthrow under coverage, underthrow over coverage, etc) and place himself in opportunities' way, but I think in JT's case he was on an island but still got his. look at Doug's 10 picks and you will see 8 or 9 tip drill type picks. Doug had all-american CB Rodney Holland on one side and two excellent cover guys on the other side, both a bit undersized but knew how to knock a ball down, he also had bulls up front putting pressure on (Fellows, Burt, Tex, Timmer, etc) and good LB's in drops (Clete, K Timmer) which forced so many bad throws. Doug had great anticipation, and was short enough to not be seen until the ball was released! 1984 was also the early era of west coast, where the passing game was more wild west gunslinger, not the sophistication you see today.
I wonder if the 2 Doug Kimballs are from 1 including regular season and 1 including playoffs? (not sure if he had two picks in the playoffs)
I feel like there should be a special category for INTs -- the Joe Roberts category --

Re: Interception Record
When I think of Joey, I'm always thinking about all of PI calls that went against him. It seemed if you had no other play you threw it deep and counted on the refs tossing the yellow flag.

Wow that is a great set of DB's. Derek Able was way underrated with Holland on the team, he was fast and physical.JDoub wrote:I think Doug Kimball had 9 INT's in 1984, thinking that was a season record at that time (so many of those were off deflections, Doug was always around the ball and had great corners in Holland, Johnson, and DA)

Re: Interception Record
Sometimes there are interesting records inside the records. For instance, Bob Given is listed as one of the all-time interception leaders in the "Per Season" stats. But the inside story is he is the all-time interception record holder vs. the griz. According to the book "The Great Divide" Given picked off 1 in '63, 1 in '64 and 2 in '65. Plus, the Cats won all three games!

Re: Interception Record
Thank you Hawks86. Back in the day of the MSU ASA they mailed this out to donars who contributed above a certain dollar amount. For Bobcat loving contributors more than a couple of days drive from Bozeman this was like mana from heaven. The internet changed things somewhat, but the Media Guide gives you almost everything one would wish to know about the Bobcats.Hawks86 wrote:and it still does.
