Webstream for MSU Football

Post by CodyCat » Thu Mar 15, 2018 10:43 am

I am looking at getting rid of cable. I remember there being a lot of talk about streaming MSU games via PlutoTV. I have some questions. Does PlutoTV have an App? If so, what system has the app that I can plug into my TV? Google Chromecast? Roku? Others?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Will wait for others to chime in for verification but I think all the systems have an app. We have Amazon Fire TV and two Roku. They do the job but sometimes can have glitches. And we stream only, no cable or satellite.

I know for sure that Roku does, because I use that. There's also an Android (and I assume and Apple) app as well - have watched a few things on my phone.

Judging from the user feedback among all of us here last season, I don't think it really matters what device you're using. The quality of the stream seemed to be consistent across any device.

For reference, I watched it on an Apple display and installed the app from the App Store.

I watched PlutoTV on the Apple iPad app, and also on my TV using the AppleTV device app.

That said, I almost always got a better picture (less pixelation) by simply accessing watchbigsky.com in a web browser, and then using Airplay to send it to the AppleTV appliance for large screen viewing. In other words, I substituted a web browser for the PlutoTV apps.

EDIT: The Root football games are not streamed on PlutoTV.

EDIT: Please see tdub's note below for a way to get the Root games.

I streamed all the Pluto games on my Apple TV and my iPhone. For the Root games, I downloaded and subscribed to Direct TV Now’s cheapest package ($35/mo I think). The Root games showed on Audience Network. Have both apps on my phone so I didn’t miss a game. If you time subscribing to Direct TV Now correctly, it started with a 30 day free trial so you can catch several conference games before you need to pay anything.

This is exactly what I did, except I also used the Firestick from Amazon. The interesting thing about Pluto TV, because they carry the BSC the games are left up for months and can be rewatched. The problem for me were sketchy quality at times, glitches that required reloading the app, but, hey when in Ethiopia one is grateful to have any access. I'm hoping this Fall we will have a higher quality feed. Give it a shot, be prepared for some frustrations, but overall you should get to see some/most games.

I seem to remember only a couple games, maybe three, being televised by Pluto.

That is true. I used the Direct Tv basic offer to get the others!

We don't know the ROOT schedule for next year, but looking at the schedule next year:

8/30 WIU - this will be on http://www.msubobcats.com/football and costs $9.99 I think. Of all the streaming services to watch Cat games on, this has bee the worst for me which is irritating because it's $10.
9/9 @ SDSU - No clue. I'm guessing it'll air on Midcon but no idea if there is a streaming option. I'm sure you can pay at SDSU but I'm hoping there is a free version.
9/15 Wagner - same as WIU, will probably cost $9.99.
The rest of the games will either be on Pluto or ROOT. Last year was sweet because there was a free 3 month trial for DirecTV, which covered all the games.

More likely it's looking like it's going to cost at last $20 for the 2 home OOC games, and if you need to buy DirecTV Go to get ROOT, it's $35/month if you can't find any trials. May need 2 month's to get all the games.

And yes, PlutoTV has an app, I use it on my AppleTV and it works just fine. As others have said, watchbigsky.com actually works better sometimes but it is harder to stream to your TV with.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference (SDSU) has an ESPN3 streaming channel.
