Ndsu would have trouble going 9-2 with this schedule.

It's next to impossible to know who's going to finish in the top five, let alone the top 25 at this point. Does anyone ever go back and look at the last year's pre-season polls and compare them to how they actually end up? These guys hardly ever come close. Some will come back and say they didn't do bad, because they got 18 teams in the top 25 from their pre-season prediction. Except they don't point out that the hardly any of those 18 finished within 7 spots of where they predicted.

I don't think so. It seems obvious that the guy doing the rankings doesn't know Stitt.

Can't make up my mind as to which is better - 55-21 or 48-14.

The most appalling thing on this list (aside from the DarkPinkBItches) is that Kennesaw State is at 25?! That's not legit. Another miss is that Weber State isnt up there.

Weber>Kennesaw no question.

I'll compile the data and leave you guys to debate the merits of a preseason poll. I think it's just for discussion purposes in the dead summer period, but here is what I found! Note: I couldn't find another poll that was released this early from last year (e.g. May 2016) I found the Stats Preseason rankings released August 8, 2016 (http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/artic ... eason-poll) and they are as follows:

1. NDSU (First place votes -152 of 158 total)
2. Sam Houston State (1st pl votes-2)
3. Jacksonville State (4 votes)
4. Richmond
5. Northern Iowa
6.Chattanooga
7. Charleston Southern
8. South Dakota State
9. William & Mary
10. Illinois State
11. McNeese State
12. James Madison (2016 FCS National Champions)
13. Montana
14. Eastern Washington
15. Citadel
16. Coastal Carolina
17. Portland State
18. Northern Arizona
19. North Dakota
20. Western Illinois
21. Colgate
22. New Hampshire
23. Villanova
24. Towson
25. North Carolina A&T

Final top 25 of 2016 was (from http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/football/f ... fcs-top-25):
1. James Madison (154 first place votes which was all the votes. No idea why there was 158 votes in the preseason and 154 in the postseason votes...)
2. Youngstown State
3. North Dakota State
4. Eastern Washington
5. Sam Houston State
6. South Dakota State
7. Jacksonville State
8. Richmond
9. Wofford
10. Citadel
11. Villanova
12. North Dakota
13. Chattanooga
14. Central Arkansas
15. Charleston Southern
16. Grambling State
17. New Hampshire
18. Coastal Carolina
19. San Diego
20. North Carolina A&T
21. Lehigh
22. North Carolina Central
23. Samford
24. Cal Poly
25. Weber State

Interesting to look at. Some teams stayed near the top (NDSU, SHSU, Jacksonville St, SDSU, Richmond) while others dropped off the board completely (dUMb, Portland State, NAU, Illinois State, McNeese State) What do you guys think?

EDIT: Found a June 2016 top 25 (https://athlonsports.com/college-footba ... op-25-2016) Same Site, final (Jan 2017) top 25 (https://athlonsports.com/college-footba ... -poll-2016)
If you guys would like to compare and contrast that one instead, go right ahead :D

ummmmmm.....

I am usually overly optimistic about the cats, but.... dude, this schedule might be the most difficult I have ever seen for the cats. Still a new Coaching staff, still a very young team overall, like 90% of our secondary recently left, quit, or got kicked off the team..... We are still just hoping that Chris Murray learns how to pass this offseason....

Even though I think this team will show improvement from last year... With this schedule I think 6-5 is about the most we can hope for. There is a very legit chance that we have a worse record than 2016. I hate saying that, but it is the truth. Damn near every game on the schedule will be a challenge.

Now 2018, different story. By 2018, very solid team returning, Coaching staffs 3rd year... I expect them to be making a solid run in the playoffs by then.

You think we go from 6 and 5 to solid playoff run in a season? That's pretty optimistic I think. I could see 6 and 5 and then making the playoffs. I mean I hope you're right but that's a big jump in success.

My hopes and dreams of this program are slowly fading. Nothing to do with this staff, I honestly think that if we had an easier schedule that we could probably see a decent playoff run. I think it is great to have a hard schedule, but this year is not going to do us any favors. Also, take into account we have lost a handful of decent players as of late. I hope that come November that I am sitting here questioning myself, but as of now I think we head into November with maybe 2 wins under our belts. Unfortunately, people will turn on Choate and I think he will be on the hot seat for his third season. I also see another crappy season taking away from any future construction on the stadium. Hope I am very wrong.

Playing great teams only shows you what it takes to be great. Even with a soft schedule there's no guarantee this team would make the playoffs. Might as well play the best competition you can, it will be the best long-term strategy.

We can beat anyone on our schedule. It is just if we can consistently win games. The first 5 games are tough but we need to bring it to those teams. We have a very dynamic QB that teams can't gameplan for in their practices. To be the best you have to play the best and win. Reduce the turnovers and we will be right there in every game. The Cats need to put their ears back and attack and attack and see who is left standing.

I'm excited for the season! Huge opening home game. We need to win that game and I think this team will get hot.

I love the schedule MSU has this year.

I know it sounds cliche, but if a coach can get his players to do what they can do and not try to do too much they can succeed. Focusing on doing the simple things extremely well is the key. It's true in every walk of life.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).
