Logo policy and beer

Post by Hawks86 » Sun Jan 15, 2017 10:04 am

Montana State University is considering changing its policies to allow the president to grant permission to use the university’s trademarked logos on alcoholic products.
MSU’s current policy prohibits licensing trademarks for alcohol, tobacco or firearms.

I like beer and I like MSU but I'm not thrilled at the message this may convey.

What about cozies, flasks, mugs, and bottle openers?

Those aren't exclusively alcoholic products. I'm fine with those. Don't we have some of those already? I assumed it was for beer cans and such. If not I have no issue with cozies and the rest.

How did Bridger Brewery get the rights to their Bobcat Brown?

You are confused with marketing and trademarks. They didn't use the MSU bobcat's trademark. They are legal to use bobcat brown. Now.if they called it bobcat blue and gold beer, that would have been an issue.

Now the real issue is that they are discussing using the logo for alcohol sales, and with that would go in stadium sales of beer at games.

That drinking beer is associated with college sports? The horror!

Sounds like the crowd that doesn't mind seeing a knife to the gut spilling intestines on national TV but a nipple or someone cursing is completely out of the question.

I have no problem with this.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Why just football, why not basketball, track, cross country, rodeo, all sporting events. Let's REALLY boost those logo sales. Don't stop here, why not all alcoholic beverages. AND for those who do not enjoy sitting by alcohol induced inspiring words, well they can just leave! I THINK ENOUGH IS CARRIED IN ONE WAY OR THE OTHER ALREADY.

Any proposal of alternative fundraising other than raising tuition and increased state funding should not be allowed. 8)

I think you are confusing two different issues. This is just talking about Breweries paying for the right to put the Logo on their beer, not about selling it in the stadiums.

I don't really see it that way, but that doesn't matter. What does matter is more revenue coming into MSU, and this will help with that.

I own all of these. Were these permitted under the previous policy or we just pretending they were for pop? Not sure how the flask snuck through, but my can coozies have never touched a Pepsi!

Yes, I agree it will raise revenue. A person could even say a worthy tax. The questions become how much and for how long? No one knows. And so, what does the University sell next?

It's a no brainer. Do it. It is no worse, and in fact less harmful than licensing to Coke and Pepsi IMO!

Just don't put our name on some shiitty beer. Make sure it's good and maybe good enough to win a beer award. Something all of us micro brew junkies crave, not because it's got our name on it.

I'll be honest, I'd try a "Champ's Choice" IPA, but if it sucks, I'll be pissed because I wasted money on sucky beer and I'd probably never try a Bobcat Brew again, and 2 I'll think less of my alma mater for allowing our good name to be cheapened by piss water only suitable for swine.

If we need a beer taster to make sure it's up to snuff, I could volunteer. [emoji6][emoji106][emoji482]

I'm with you, however anything IPA is swill! So, I am your Lager Pilsner man! 8)
