All-Ash Team

Post by CelticCat » Fri Dec 02, 2016 1:28 pm

Well now that the off-season is upon us, and we've had a full season with Choate at the helm, for fun I thought I'd put together a two-deep of the best of the best of the Ash recruits. I was also curious to see where his strengths and weaknesses lied in the recruiting game.

Note, this has to be players recruited/signed by Ash, not Kramer recruits. Has to be a two-deep, which was hard to choose in several positions. I have an HM category simply to show where we had an abundance of talent, and where we underproduced.

I may have missed some people or am wrong about some guys being Ash recruits. I also have a hard time sometimes figuring out which specific position guys played, especially along the OL and in the LB spot, so correct me if I get that wrong.

QB: McGhee, Prukop
HM: Bleskin

RB: Kirk, O. Davis
HM: Crawford, Robinson, Shawn Johnson, Brekke, Newell and even CJ Palmer.

WR: Akpla, Flotkoetter
WR: Lloyd, Griebel
WR: Bleskin, Herbert
HM: Gilbert, Ellis, Gates, Paige.

TE: Sandland, Salanoa
HM: Foster, Perkins, Barth, Sullivan.

LT: Weidenaar, Eekhoff
LG: Flynn, Godecke
C: Devereaux, Horn
RG: Horn, Brott
RT: Catalano, Mahoney
Pretty thin here overall, our OL attrition is well-documented. But a solid group of starters. HM Monte Folsom since he was switched.

DE (bandit): Daly, Schreibeis
DE (strong): Laidet, Coe
Very thin here as well. HM Fa'anono, could count Grant Collins since he switched. Verlanic was coming on before he retired.

DT: Minter, Dees
DT: Sheridan, D'Alba
HM: the Bignells, Nate and Brian, Connor Thomas, Yates, Wright played fairly well this year

OLB: Singleton, Grosulak
MLB: Owens, Moeakiola
OLB: Mac Bignell, Moore
HM: Fletcher Collins, Michael Foster. Maybe Matt Harris, Rhett Young. Hill!

S: Fuller, Marshall
S: Bethley, McCabe
HM: Garcia, Konkol is coming on.

CB: Jones, Gords
CB: Flowers, Keeton
HM: Strong, Timmer. Several TBDs here.

K: Jason Cunningham

After putting this together, we've had solid players in all positions, and several all-time greats especially on the offensive side.

Where Ash teams fell short were secondary, especially safety, and the DL. We had an elite line in 2010-2012, but once those guys were gone we never found that same success. Also our OL attrition was ridiculous, but still managed to field a decent OL every year (thanks Mac!).

Also I was surprised when I put the WR list together, it wasn't as deep as I was expecting. We've had some greats, but across the board they've been above average to good.

Great post, LOTS of great player.

Almost need a utility/athlete category, guys who played WR, RB, Slot, PR and KR. My 2 tops guys would be Gilbert and Brekke. I'm drawing blank, there is a 3rd.

Looking back at the list we had some studs through out the years. A handle full will end up in the Bobcat HOF.

Good list, but I don't think Prukop belongs tied with McGhee for first team QB. I'd put Crawford with Kirk, if anyone, but not O. Davis. Kirk probably deserves that spot alone, like McGhee at QB.

I'd put Cody Kempt in as HM at QB with Bleskin. He was playing pretty well in 2009 before becoming DM's backup the next fall. He played better than Jake ever did.

There's the truth, and then there's what's reported in the papers.

Shawn John?

Wasn't Crawford a Kramer recruit?

Shaun Sampson did walk-on during Ash's first year in 2008 if I'm not mistaken. He should be the first team center. Also Jody Owens was a WLB, not a Mike.

Now do the same with an all Kramer team. Which is better?

Ash brought Crawford here that fall after Kramer got fired.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

I know but I thought he was committed to Kramer. I could be wrong.

Don't think so. I'm pretty sure Kane and Ash recruited him here.

1. Didn't Schreibeis play both ends or am I imagining stuff?
2. After reading this it is unbelievable how small that o line and d line list are.

Hmm interesting :-k He threw for under 200 a game in his 6 starts that year, had 1 great game against Eastern and a good game against South Dakota and was average at best those other starts. Both guys were iffy decision makers but Bleskin was the better QB.

QB should just be McGhee and Prukop.

There should be no center unless Samson was and Ash recruit. It has been a real disappointing position for a long time for me.

I feel like Minter, Sheridan and Possibly Ogden(if he was an Ash recruit can't quite remember) are the only DTs that have really impressed me. Jury is still out on Yates.

Was Person an Ash recruit?

Shaun Sampson should be a 1st team center and Joel Horn definitely deserves to be mentioned at Center.

Ogden was part of Kramer's last class.

Person was part of Kramer's second to last class.

I liked the DL from Drake. D'Alba??

Thought he was pretty solid.

He was an ok player. I always thought he was a dirty player, just didn't care for him. Was kind of a prick tbh

D'Alba was a bit dirty maybe, but he was pretty solid. He'd be starting right now IMO.
