Best Cat-Griz games

Post by TomCat88 » Thu Nov 24, 2016 1:33 pm

Need to wait a couple months, but I thought that was one of the better Cat-Griz games I've seen. A lot of electrifying plays, good comeback, and an exciting finish.

1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2010 were all good games in recent times.

The game we ended the streak was the only game I've watched that I thought was better.

2003 is probably the best I've seen live.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

I'm still not over the '97 game.

Me either. My last game in Bozeman before moving to Portland. I remember the students chanting "Pooooooor Grizzlies" and a few of us olds were trying to tell them it's not over yet. Then for some reason Hysell decides to play Cover 2 instead of Cover 3 or even Prevent, and they complete that deep pass, and then Heppner kicks in the FG to win the game.

Finally made it to Bozeman again last year for the first time since 1997 for Cat-Griz last year.

Favorite for me is probably 2012 just because it was in Missoula and I was there to see it. Most of my friends there are Griz but they tolerate me, and it was just a blast of a weekend catching up with old friends. A close second it the 2002 game watched at a now-closed sports' bar in Jantzen Beach in Portland with about 200 Griz fans and maybe 40 of us Bobcat fans. We got to the site right when it opened and a group of 8 of us were sitting front and center. When Junior Adams returned that kickoff to open the game we went crazy and didn't stop until Sunday afternoon once the game was won. The Griz fans were actually happy for us, oddly, after the game. Or maybe they were in disbelief. Not sure but wow it was awesome.

Best feeling watching a game I've ever had as a fan, easily.

How long was Junior's kickoff return?

It wasn't Junior, was it? What year was the KO return game?

Damn I'm getting old. It was Corey Smith in the 2003 game. Back to back but I remember the 2002 game because of our reaction and drunk dialing every Griz we knew afterward singing Stand Up and Cheer and chanting "Big Sky Champions" afterward.

I have to have two favorites:

The 1968 game was the first Cat/griz game I ever saw. I was just a kid, the Cats won, and I got to watch my Dad help Paul Schafer (58 carries 234 yards) to the locker room after the game because he could not get there on his own.

The game when they broke the streak I will never forget. I watched it on TV but even in my living room I couldn't sit down for entire 4th quarter. Honestly I kept waiting for the Cats to blow it. When they didn't I was going crazy and high fiving my kids. I recorded it on VHS and still watch it occasionally.

After those any game the Cats win is a great game

My favorite Cat-Griz games are 1984, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. Only five? you say. Here's why:

1984 my mom died and MSU beat UM and won national title.
2002 my first of two kids (named her after my mom) was on the way and MSU ended the streak.
2003 she was born and MSU beat Griz again.
2005 second kid was on the way and the Bobcats beat UM again.
2006 she was born and the Cat-Griz game may have been lost, but MSU won its first playoff game since 1984.

I probably should've been like Mr. Dugger.

Best for me means ones that we won - so I won't include heartbreakers like 1997.

The game where we broke the streak - 2002. I was lucky enough to be there. Froze my butt off, and worth every frozen second.
2003, when Corey Smith returned the opening kickoff into the end zone. We got into the stadium just in time to see the play - hugging and high fiving everyone on our way to our seats.
2012??? I think? When Mike Rider sealed it with an interception at the goal line with seconds left.
2016. For all the reasons already mentioned in other threads.

Rider sealed the 2010 win no 2012. I was there. The wind was coming out of hell gate canyon right into my face as the snow came down sideways. That was a very cold day. But I didnt care. I was flipped off, yelled at, cursed at, and IT WAS AWESOME.

I knew I was a little hazy on the date - thanks for helping me get it straight. I wasn't there, but it was an incredible game to watch on TV....and obviously one of my favorites.

If you take off your blue and gold glasses, you have to admit that the 1997 game was probably the best in terms of dramatics. I thought this last game was incredibly exciting and had so many big plays.

We had 11 explosive plays (plays of 15 yards or more). That matched last year's total. We had 8 in 2013, 6 in 2014, but no more than five in any year since 2004.

We outgained them by 100 yards, which is the first time we've outgained them since 2008. We lost that game 35-3 despite outgaining them 294-283, but UM had a long punt return score and a long INT return score, so the stats were skewed. We outgained them in 2005 370-220. So this is probably the best we've played against UM since 2005. A good sign if you ask me.

2003. Beau Clark makes three incredible plays in a row to move the griz out of a sure touchdown, into a FG. Two sacks and a pressure. Loved that Belgrade kid.

2005. Travis Lulay could barely walk during the 2nd half. Gutted it out to the frenzied cheers of Luuuuulaaaaaaay Luuuuulaaaaaaay Lulay Lulay all day long. Tremendous effort by the freshman RB too.

I'm old, but I was pretty young when Don Hass ran for over 200 against the Griz. My first remembrance of the game I think in 1966.

Correction.... 1967 from a previous post. I remember the 1966 game as well, when I was 6 :)
