2016 Depth Chart
I don't recall seeing a post regarding the first depth chart. Here it is below. Look at the average height and weight of the offensive line: 6'5" and 287 pounds. Wow!
Also, two guys that don't get much ink, but I think Fletcher Collins and McCabe are difference makers on defense. We also have Grant Collins at end now and our secondary actually looks solid.
I think we surprise a lot of people this year. New culture and solid personnel could lead to something special.

Re: 2016 Depth Chart
MSU did release the first depth chart at the Big Sky Kick off early this week. See Colter's cover in the thread labeled "Big sky kick off coverage"

That's where the depth chart came from. I didn't think Colter wanted a discussion thread on the depth chart buried in the Big Sky thread. That's why I started this thread on the depth chart.

Our O line will be quite a bi smaller than last year (Probably was our biggest OL of all time) but I think they'll be pretty good.

I was surprise by the move of Ojo to buck end. He seems a bit small for that and I thought he was supposed to have a ton of potential at lb.

Not like its a demotion. He has a good frame to gain weight and he is good off the edge. We need pass rushers.technoCat wrote:I was surprise by the move of Ojo to buck end. He seems a bit small for that and I thought he was supposed to have a ton of potential at lb.

Re: 2016 Depth Chart
Things I was surprised about on the depth chart:
John D'Agostino over Jayshawn Gates at "H" receiver
Grant Collins and Shiloh LaBoy over Jessie Clark at Buck
Wilson Brott at left tackle. Wasn't he brought in as a tight end? I hadn't heard of him being moved prior to this.
Braelen Evans as the presumptive starter at Field Cornerback. Has he played at all for the Bobcats yet? I thought he was dealing with injuries? I hope he's back to 100%
Thoughts?

I was also surprised by Laboy over Clark. Jessie clark was really raw and kind of one dimensional last year. Great athlete and suspect he will move up the chart

Clark was a beast when he saw the field. I think he will be a pass rush specialist. He had 5 or 6 sacks in 5 starts I think and forced 4 or 5 fumbles if I'm not mistaken.spring creek cat wrote:I was also surprised by Laboy over Clark. Re: 2016 Depth Chart
In regards to the secondary, I think Strong and Evans are listed as the starter because they played spring ball and that where they fell. I assume by the time we go to Moscow and lay a beat down on the Vandals, Hale and Walker will both be the starters at CB. Don't count out Strong though, that kid has all the skills and if Hale and Walker push him to be better... Watch out, Hale and Strong could be a shutdown tandem that haunts the BSC for the next 3 years.blueandgoldblitz wrote:Things I was surprised about on the depth chart:

Clark is a surprise to me too, I though he was really coming together at the end of last season. I hope he didn't lose his edge through the offseason. I also thought Johnny D was also putting together toward the end, so not surprised he's starting.

He also got ran over all game. He's a situational pass rusher IMO.BleedingBLue wrote:Clark was a beast when he saw the field. I think he will be a pass rush specialist. Re: 2016 Depth Chart
Not that I put a lot of stock in depth charts at this point, but Evans over Alley is just strange because I don't recall hearing anything (good or bad) about Evans, but have heard some good things about Alley. D'Agostino over Gates isn't as surprising because he's got a knack for getting open and catching everything thrown his way.
Whatever the case camp is going to be off the charts for the defense. I think there's one player, maybe two, that has a spot locked up, but everything else is a battle. Here's my projected starters on defense at this point:
Fa'anono, Collins - DE
No idea - DT
Bignell, No idea - LB
Hale, Walker - CB
McCabe, Garcia - S
Four spots are completely unsettled. Bignell is the only one starting for sure. I'm fairly confident that Fa'anono will. The rest of the named players I'm about 67% sure on.

Re: 2016 Depth Chart
Overall the talent "appears" to be improved. I think one of the key players is Fa'anono. If he has a standout year it should make a huge difference for the line. He needs to be able to pressure the QB from that side. If so, the combination of a strong secondary and Collins, Clark and LaBoy bringing pressure and Bignell's all-around skill will allow MSU to make teams one-dimensional.

Re: 2016 Depth Chart
Yes, it looks like the pass defense will be better, especially if Fa'anono improves. I think you'll see good pressure from our Bandit (or whatever it's called now), but Fa'anono, who plays more of a run stopping end needs to get pressure on pass rushing downs. He only had 3.0 sacks last year, while Clark and Hutchins combined for 8.5 from the rush end spot. That isn't enough for either position. I think Clark would've had 12-13 sacks last year if he'd came in ready to play at the start, so with him and Collins splitting that spot it should improve. If Fa'anono can apply pressure from the other side it'll set things up nicely.
However, the run defense, which really sets up the pass defense, is going to need to improve a lot if MSU is going to be successful. If you aren't strong up the middle (DTs, MLB and safety) against the run it'll be tough to defend the pass unless our corners play lights out. As was the case in January the DTs are the big question mark. I think things could be OK at MLB and safety.

Re: 2016 Depth Chart
Offensively, I don't think (I doubt anybody does) that MSU will be as dynamic as last year, but I do think we'll be more consistent. Psychologically, I think that will help the defense, but I also think it helps the offense. I think it's more important for an offense to be confident about being able to pick up first downs on 3rd and 4-5-6-7 and drive the field with a mix of run/pass, than it is for them to rely on the big play or improvisation.
I think we're about the same along the OL, the WRs are better, the TE isn't as good, but asking Barth to be Sandland isn't fair and Barth is a good TE, the running backs are the same. That leaves the QB spot, which is like a microcosm of my assessment of the offense. I think the offense will benefit from knowing what Bruggman is doing after the snap, especially on crucial downs.

Bruggman really looked confident and smooth the little bit I saw of him. Overall, the offense looks well-rounded.
