Preferred walk-on series

Post by Colter_Nuanez » Fri May 20, 2016 10:38 pm

We will have stories on as many of the 11 preferred walk-ons recently added by Montana State as we can get ahold of. I've spoken with Nick Van Horssen, Austin Barrette, Kamden Brown and Gabe Peppenger thus far. I'll post the stories as they are finished.

Nice story. Sounds like he has the character, attitude and toughness parts down.

Being walkons these guys won't get a lot of hype, which makes you wonder what people would've said about some of them if they had gotten scholarships. Maybe I'm mistaken, but it seems like there was a time not long ago that MSU wouldn't dream of getting a walkon like Brown from a school like Charter Oak.

I think you've got a good point there, we snagged some really good kids as walkons. Some of our best players have been walkons that earn their way. FWIW I think the guys to the West did really good as well.

I know this has already been stated but Austin has some of the best tape of any recruit in this class. Don't fool yourself, he is good at playing linebacker!

Great instincts and he finishes with authority! Talk about a huge get for a PWO!

Great tape.
Good motor. Good speed. Good pursuit angles. Good stack and shed. Great at shooting gaps. Good blitzer (finding gaps and getting there fast). Good "play reading" ability.
Great pickup for us...especially for a walkon from out of state.
I have no idea how he is coverage. I don't think any of the clips were of him in coverage.

Welcome to the Bobcat Family Austin!! Glad you're coming to MSU.

Usually when you have good lateral movement, it translates to being good in coverage. He did play some safety in high school if that matters. We did get him as a walk-on but he is getting a full academic scholarship.

I read the article, but I'm a little skeptical on the full ride academic scholarship. Those are really difficult to get, and while his ACT was good, it wasn't through the roof. I've been wrong before though.

Regardless, I am happy he's coming to Bozeman, he looks like he could be a great pick up.

As we continue our series on the 11 preferred walk-ons added by Jeff Choate in May, here's the story we did on PWO OL Connor Floden back in January.

Was able to reach five more of Montana State's incoming preferred walk-ons, each with in-state roots. We will have stories each day the rest of this week.
