Re: Costello is new AD
I like how quickly MSU moved ahead with offering the position to Costello and how quickly he accepted. It seems to say that we had no doubt that we wanted him and that he had no doubt that he really wanted the position too.
The Brennan hiccup was just that a hiccup.

Having lived in Brookings for the last 16 years, I have seen the development of SDSU athletics firsthand, especially over the past few years. Justin Sell (AD) and his team are top class people and the work they have done here is phenomenal. I believe Mr. Costello will do an outstanding job and Bobcat athletics are in great hands.

Congratulations on a great hire. SDSU will miss Leon Costello but I think everyone is happy he's been given the opportunity to lead at a great institution.
SDSU is completing its new 20,000-seat football stadium, the capstone on $100 million plus in athletics facilities improvements in about three years. Costello was a very important player in getting those improvements completed.
He's an ethical, hard-working guy that your staff and alums will appreciate.

I've heard a ton of good things about Costello. Heard as soon as he accepted he caught up with the coaches tour up in Plentywood (or as we used to call it Plentyfar). He's fired up obviously.

Just for the record: Matt Zimmer is a sports writer on the Sioux Falls "Argus Leader" newspaper and he covers SDSU athletics. Justin Sell is SDSU's Athletics Director--great guy and he had lots of confidence in Costello.CatBlitz wrote:I don't know who Matt Zimmer or Justin Snell are but I like the endorsement.VimSince03 wrote:https://twitter.com/argusmattz/status/730139562035580930
*Nm, Snell is their AD.
Again, congratulations on hiring Leon Costello.

Thanks JackJD. Thats a great endorsement from Sell. I'm amazed at what you've been able to do there.

And that's what someone who really WANTS the job sounds like. I'm guessing his and his family's facial expressions at his introduction with be in stark contrast to those of the Brennan's.

That's why I found it odd that some posters thought we needed to open a new search. The four other candidates all really, really wanted the job and would have loved to receive news that the job was back on the market yesterday morning.iaafan wrote:And that's what someone who really WANTS the job sounds like. Re: Costello is new AD
Costello was the least "exciting" in terms of experience, but honestly the guy I thought might be able to do the best job. Experience at the FCS level, at a state university in a state with only two D1 programs, and in the best FCS football conference to boot, will translate well. Plus SDSU has got a lot rolling facility wise the last few years.

They're there. He just needs to convince them to contribute. What (who) were the biggest donations at SDSU? It's also worth noting that South Dakota has less people and SDSU a smaller enrollment. SD is 28 and Montana 38 in median income. Not sure what their/our average graduate makes.Hawks86 wrote:He needs to find our own version of Dana Dykhouse and T. Denny Sanford.
MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: Costello is new AD
It would be even more encouraging if SDSU didn't have huge donors. Hopefully they did it with a just few very big donors and a lot of smaller donors. There's an MSU grad billionaire living in Bozeman, Denny Washington went to school at MSU for a short time, Beau Turner (Ted's son) went to MSU for a short time, but as someone mentioned in another thread, if their heart isn't into MSU football then they're not likely to donate. I don't think Oracle or anyone else will buy the naming rights (at least not at the price we were hoping for) since our televised games don't reach a large enough audience, but maybe they do. If there was a business in Montana that really made bank off Montanans it might be a different story.

It's too bad Klein Gilhausen passed away (obviously for more reasons than this). Maybe ask his granddaughter.

Add another Cargill family member to the list. Whitney MacMillan was given an honorary doctorate from MSU back in 2002.
