Kyle Brennan, who accepted the job of Montana State University athletics director last week, has backed out of the position.

Brennan was offered the job after a national search that resulted in five finalists visiting campus. He was introduced with fanfare at a public ceremony before more than 100 fans, alumni, faculty, staff, students and media on Monday, May 2.

Currently serving as deputy athletic director at the University of Utah, Brennan texted MSU President Waded Cruzado late Monday afternoon that he needed to talk. Later that evening during a phone conversation, Brennan said he was backing out of the job.

Brennan’s explanations were that he was concerned about finding an affordable house, moving his children into new schools and that “it didn’t feel right,” Cruzado said.

“It would be an understatement to say I am disappointed,” Cruzado said. “We simply have been dealt an extraordinarily rare and unfortunate hand.”

Brennan did not elaborate on why MSU did not feel right after accepting the job with a salary of $185,000 per year.

MSU will consider its options this week and will keep the community informed.

Well...on to the next one! He was my first choice but based on the four other candidates we interview, good people want this job. Keep your head up boys.

His excuses are about as awful as they come too. Bozeman isn't a cheap place to live no doubt but 185K a year will get you what you need and then some.

Hopefully the other guys still want the job.

Honestly I don't care, if he needs to come up with lame excuses such as housing (he would be making over $200k with incentives) and school systems (I graduated from Bozeman High, they are great schools) then he obviously didn't want the job or someone talked him out of it. I'm sure he will continue to be very successful at Utah.

The real issue I have now is who the hell is going to get the job? IMO I would never accept a job I was the #2 candidate for (especially if it was announced someone already got it). This could turn out very badly for us.

I had a feeling his family wasn't sure about what he was doing. Their body language and facial expressions just seemed odd to me. They didn't seem enthused. Did anyone else notice this? It's good he backed out, because if everyone's heart isn't in it then his performance wouldn't be very good.

I actually liked the guy from ASU better, but they might need to restart the whole process now.

My vote is guy from SDSU. . . Colter never posted his video (since Brennan was hired before Colter got a chance so why would he). The guy from SDSU has done it at this level - and in South Dakota none the less . . . I think he would be a solid hire.

I would assume you have to start a new search?... right?

How can you go back to the other candidates- "So you were obviously not our top choice, BUT our top choice backed out, so we would like to change our mind and offer you the job".....

Isn't it scary to think that people who interview potential hires can be completely wrong when they choose one candidate over another? At my job I see this over and over again, we hire employees who everybody gushes about, then they leave within a year or two. Maybe its time to completely overhaul how every business interviews potential employees, the old guard is played out.

I think Ash was MSU's 3rd or 4th choice, but he still took the job.

I'm with DaCats21. At least offer Jones. I think he's the best of the bunch to begin with.
