Best All Time Montana Athletes
I put this voting opportunity in the football forum because it includes Dane Fletcher.
Get on here and vote for Dane and whoever else you may think. Voting is way at the end.

List is already irrelevant. Dave Dickenson? Matt Miller? Hello?!

I would argue for Tanner Hall too. Dude is one of the best at his sport for the last decade and a half. No one that's not a skier probably really knows who he is though, but same with the Zadick brothers with wrestling. And as a Great Falls guy, I have to go with Todd "The Kid" Foster. When he got married, the whole town of GF seriously wanted to go to that wedding. I got to go to the airport when he came back from the Olympics.

Before the Griz posters come, I'm all for Colt Anderson and Kroy Biermann on this list.

I was kind of impressed with the Fort Shaw women's basketball team thing too. I did not know that.
And I think Dan Mortensen needs to be in the top 4.

Re: Best All Time Montana Athletes
No mention of Marvin Camel. World Champion boxer.
Shawn Davis, three time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider
Dan Mortensen should definitely be on this list. Tied for most saddle bronc titles ever with the great Casey Tibbs and has an All Around title as well.
And how about Rod Lyman who played college football (at MSU) and went on to 16 qualifications to the NFR.
(As you can tell, I am a rodeo guy.)
I like some of the athletes on the list, but I feel the candidates list is incomplete.

Re: Best All Time Montana Athletes
There's been a bunch of Olympians from Montana (hmmmm, that might be another interesting thread). The reason I thought of Gene Davis is because he did something the Zadick's didn't do (Mike was an Olympian too) - win a medal. For wrestling, it is all about the Olympics. World Championships are awesome, World Cup gold is great, but the pinnacle is an Olympic medal.catamaran wrote:Larry Questad was also an Olympic athletetdub wrote:I agree, but you could go back before the Zadick brothers even.....Gene Davis, Olympic Bronze medalist from Missoula.canyoncat wrote:Pat Donovan: Best Football player to come out of Montana to date

Wayne Estes needs to be on this list. Had his life not been cut short he would be the unquestionable number one greatest. He was probably before many posters time but learn your history and he will rise to the top.
If you're looking for someone with a little authority, I'm your man. I have as little as anyone!

I'd go with McNally, Donovan, Estes. No one approaches those three in any of their sports. Probably go with Evel for the other one. He's definitely the most famous Montana athlete of all time.

Wrestling isn't a big enough sport for anyone of them to displace McNally (baseball), Estes (basketball) or Donovan (football) by simply winning a medal at the Olympics. You need to win multiple gold in that sport to knock off any of those three.tdub wrote:There's been a bunch of Olympians from Montana (hmmmm, that might be another interesting thread). I would add Shane Collins to this list. Shane was a great football, basketball and track star (shot put champion). Also, Corey Widmer could be added to that list as well.

Re: Best All Time Montana Athletes
It's all about perspective. In the U.S., no the numbers aren't as high. But internationally it has got to be pretty close. All three sports you listed are HIGHLY U.S. dominated. Outside of the U.S., the NFL popularity falls off a cliff. Not wrestling. It is the national sport of Iran. It is HUGE in Russia and Turkey. There were 10 Olympic weights in Freestyle wrestling at the time. So that would've made Gene Davis one of the top 30 wrestlers IN THE WORLD. "Simply" winning a medal in wrestling in the Olympics is a poor way to say it. ALL wrestlers in the world tailored their training cycles to peak at the Olympics. But before they get there, there are things like winning medals in tough international competitions to even qualify your country to compete in the Olympics. Winning Olympic medals in wrestling is one of the toughest, most grueling things that can be done in sport.grizgirl wrote:Wrestling isn't a big enough sport for anyone of them to displace McNally (baseball), Estes (basketball) or Donovan (football) by simply winning a medal at the Olympics. My goal was not to compare or displace to those other athletes. They're great. But to slight the international accomplishment in wrestling because the participation numbers in the U.S. is silly.
