Right...,i agree with that. I wouldn't mind seeing guys like paige or gates run track. I disagree that track coaches should take ALL skill position football players. What events would Herbert, kalfell, Sullivan, Newell, daugistino, timmer, etc take part in?

That said, if our track coaches can teach our defensive backs to turn and look for the ball, I retract everything I've said previous to this.

That is, no track. Different animal. Apparently the head turn/no head turn options are still not understood. Both are done correctly in different scenarios.

DBs turning their head every time is not proper technique. See previous thread addressing this. Perhaps it is just me not understanding you.

Read the previous thread. Also have some experience. Will only speak for myself. I understand.

Re: This & That 2016
As the mom of a track team member (who was also a pretty kick ass high school receiver - Class C'er in the Shrine Game), I think the football players get enough gym time, weight room time and access to people who can help improve their skills. Sure, some of them could score some points in track, but some of the track athletes could be playing on other teams at MSU, as well. It's not like the track team is a dumpster of kids needing help from the football team. Seriously. If the football team wants to run, go run. When the volleyball ladies want to ski, they don't go Bogart a spot on the alpine team. I don't really mean to sound bitchy, but not everything at MSU needs to be about football. Even though we love it so. Myself included.

Interesting perspective, I have no dog in the fight and will admit that I haven't given it a lot of thought and wouldn't know all the inside story but on the surface it doesn't seem like it should be that big of deal.
I kind of like the old days when an athlete that could do it all was allowed and encouraged to do it all. No doubt those old days aren't coming back, its all about specialize now.
Funny that you should bring up the ski team, I wonder if that great skier Jan Stenerud pushed some poor kid off the football team when he became our kicker. Evidently he turned out to be ok at least.

If you're looking for someone with a little authority, I'm your man. I have as little as anyone!

I mean no disrespect towards the other athletes, especially as I'm a huge track fan, but football matters because it actually makes money. Without football we wouldn't have any other sports.

Well, of course it matters. It's why most of us are "here". I spend way more on football than any other sport, even being a track parent. But it doesn't mean that the other teams need to make exceptions and provisions for the football team. If it were really a matter of them needing the training, I'm sure the track team would be ok with sharing the track for practices.bobcat99 wrote:I mean no disrespect towards the other athletes, especially as I'm a huge track fan, but football matters because it actually makes money. I'm guessing there aren't many athletes at MSU who were one-sport wonders in high school. But, as mentioned above, it's about specialization at this level. Plus, I'd imagine a good majority of the seasons overlap anyway.
Now start saving for next year's 50/50 drawings!

Re: This & That 2016
That's absolutely not true. Not every college that has Division 1 sports has a football team. At least that's how I am reading your post, if football was not at MSU there would be no other sports teams period. Correct me if I am wrong. According to wiki, when I searched "Division 1 colleges without football," there are 93 universities that participate in D1 athletics that do no have a football program. Maybe you want to explain your comment a bit further...bobcat99 wrote:I mean no disrespect towards the other athletes, especially as I'm a huge track fan, but football matters because it actually makes money. Re: This & That 2016
my guess is that he means that football is the real money maker for this program, and football is where a good majority of our athletic budget goes to . . . he is completely right in that. Football is king at Montana StateTeam10 wrote:That's absolutely not true. Not every college that has Division 1 sports has a football team. Re: This & That 2016
WSSMommy, your son is an outstanding athlete with great work ethic, better than anyone I've seen in years, but, he is also mid distance, and you are right, there is not much of a need for a football player to practice their mid distance skills, as it does not relate to football. When I argue football players trying out for track its the throwers, the big explosive athletes that can improve coordination, footwork and explosive movements, as well as the sprinters. You can't argue that learning proper sprinting technique hurts a football skill player. Also, the reps taken in track do not take away from the other athletes, you have a 400 meter track, 8 lanes (5 and 8 on a 200 indoor). And...the football players do not get to get out of football lifts or conditioning, if they do track it is all extra.

Re: This & That 2016
The other point I was trying to make is that these football athletes were some of the best track athletes, and I have already named plenty of names to prove my point there, but they have to choose a sport to go to college and compete in and for a lot of those multi sport athletes, football is the most beneficial, and the opportunity to be a multi sport athlete in college is very rare. Give them a shot, up to now the track team has not missed when letting other sport athletes try out, including women's basketball, soccer players from high school, even an exchange student every now and then. Also, as a former thrower for MSU I will be the first to say that the track team is not a dumpster for athletes, anybody that has done track knows how hard it is to compete in any track event, and to do it at the Division 1 level is even harder and more impressive.
