Ft. Lewis

Post by Mr Lisle » Wed Jun 24, 2015 6:18 pm

We're moving inside ten weeks, so it's time to start paying attention. Here's a little Ft. Lewis overview.

Ft. Lewis is a liberal arts college located on 247 beautiful acres at 6,872 feet ASL in Durango, Colorado. It began as a military fort, became an indian boarding school, then a high school, then a junior college and in 1964 a four year college. A member of the Rocky Mountain Conference they play in 4,000 capacity Dennison Memorial Stadium, a single sided set-up. They are the "SKYHAWKS". They went 3-8 in 2014, but have one of their signature wins in several years, a 23-22 victory over DII National Champion, Colorado State Pueblo. Still, they only have 11 wins in the past 4 years. Our old opponent from his Idaho days, John L. Smith became head coach in 2013. You might want to look up his interesting career which peaked at Michigan State, bottomed when he quit his alma matre, Weber State before coaching a single game and finds himself now at DII Ft. Lewis. But, the guy is a football coach! He's built a good DII staff including former Idaho defensive coordinator, Ed Rifilato and Dave Brown who went from Nevada with Nigel Burton to help install the pistol at Portland State. Brown is the OC. They are coming into 2015 with 21 seniors and 15 juniors. We will be seeing #10 senior Jordan Doyle a 6'2 218 lb QB who last year completed 151 passes for 1,509 yards, 10 TD's, and rushed for 6 more. Interesting tho', Smith brought in a junior JC QB. Juan Hill is a 280 senior D lineman whose played in 22 games and had 34 tackles last year. Sophmore P.J. Hall returns at running back. Just 5'6, 170 he was the leading rusher last with 741 yards. Ryan Ross returns to start his third year at linebacker. He had 98 total tackles in 2014, 55 unassisted. RINGER ALERT....Anton Whitehead played for Louisville from 2006-2010 redshirtted and graduated in 4 years. He's coming out of "retirement" to play his 4th year of eligilibity. He didn not play for Smith at Louisville who was already at Michigan State. He was a Sporting News high school All American, and the Big East Freshman of the Year. At 6'6 263 he will be fun to deal with. Ft. Lewis has struggled with Big Sky teams over the years. In '07 they lost to the griz 55-0, 2010 lost to MSU 59-10, 2011 lost 58-13 to NAU and lost again to NAU in 2012 69-0, 2013 beaten by Southern Utah 49-0 and 52-17 to Davis last year. As always, the CATS need to come out swinging...no matter who they're lineing up against and let the chips fly.

I believe that's Deantwan Whitehead. If so he only played one season as a true frosh and had to retire due to a spinal condition. That was 2007. He turns 28 in December. 5-star recruit on Scout out of HS and his one year at Louisville was impressive. Here's hoping Whitehead doesn't pull a Woodhead.

How can he "come out of retirement?" I thought you had 10 semesters to play 4 years unless you got a medial redshirt? The clock starts running as soon as you start. Obviously that isn't the rule?

Is this part relevant to his eligibility?
Flexible Eligibility Clock
Unlike Division I, which starts a five-year eligibility clock ticking the moment you start college, Division II offers 10 semesters (or 15 quarters) of eligibility. If you have to leave school for family, medical, or any other reason, your eligibility clock pauses and doesn’t restart until you re-enroll in school.

Vernon Adams hasn't been in school over 10 semesters so not applicable. The transfer rule is what he is testing. Good information on Fort Lewis btw. Glad to finally talk actual football. That game can't come soon enough.

This would explain it.
