It is a such a crazy process, each of the guys could get a shot. Last year a kid from Montana Tech participated in either the Cat or Griz pro day and he ended up getting a free agent deal. He was on nobody's radar but was a physical specimen. Never even earned Frontier Conference honorable mention but was big, strong and fast. He didn't last with Baltimore, but you never know. Even stranger, didn't Denarious light up pro day. I thought he completed like 48 of 50 passes with one drop and had like the 4th fastest QB time in comparison to the combine?

Regardless, good luck to the participants! Hope to see you all play on Sundays!

McGhee's big drawback was injuries or more to the point the type of injuries. Especially the one his senior year to his throwing shoulder. NFL teams aren't too willing to invest in players, especially FCS players, with his kind of injury history. Guys like Na'a and SJ will have that going against them as well, however, their injuries may not be as damning.

MSU rarely produces NFL players which is evident by the low number of current NFL players. I doubt it will be much different this year. I do think that Johnson (when healthy) can be as good a kick returner as anyone currently in the NFL. Maybe his approach is to get visibility by playing Canadian ball. I hope that works because he should be able to compete at that level.

Tomorrow's pro day begins at 11 am. Just Alex Singleton, Eryon Barnett and Rob Marshall will participate.

Shawn Johnson will head to Canada in May. He's still working out with the team. Quinn Catalano, Deonte Flowers, Na'a Moekiola, Cole Moore and Tiai Salanoa have decided to retire. Each is an exceptional man who I am thankful I got a chance to to get to know a little bit.

I've spoken with Kane Ioane and he said Cole Moore got accepted to grad school. I played a little city league hoops with Deonte and he is going to become a minister. I'm not sure what Catalano, Salanoa or Moeakiola have planned.

I didn't mention all the seniors because the ones I did mention are the ones with pro potential.

I was hoping Shawn John was participating, I have always been curious what his legit 40 time would be?

I've been curious, why did SJ go to Canada without even attempting a try at the NFL? I mean heck I could see him having an in to the USC pro day which would mean more scouts.

I underlined two clauses. The way you phrased them leads me to believe you think this is a coincidence; I could hardly disagree more. The reason the guy didn't stick is probably that he wasn't good enough at football to make an All-Conference team.

I never understood why teams put the emphasis they do on combine numbers at the expense of college production. The best way to learn what kind of football player a guy can be is to watch him play football. The four years of explosive tape Shawn Johnson put together only got him as far as Canada, but every year teams spend picks on guys who did nothing in pads but are really good at overgrown school field days. 99% of the time those guys who did nothing in college do nothing in the pros.

Really impressive in the 40 for all 3. I had Barnett at 4.36, 4.41; Marshall at 4.60, 4.45; Singleton at 4.55 twice

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

In comparison to the NFL combine, Alex's unofficial 40 time of 4.55 (twice) puts him in a tie for the 2nd fastest 40 among linebackers tested at the combine. Vic Beasley ran a 4.53, Kwon Alexander out of LSU ran a 4.55, and two others ran under 4.6.

Benardrick McKinney out of Mississippi St., who is widely regarded as the top MLB in the draft, put up 16 reps on the bench press at the combine which tied him for the lowest amount among linebackers. Alex did 15. Just for a comparison.

Alex's vertical of 31.0 would put him a tie for 5th to last among the competitors at the combine at the linebacker position. However, once again many of the guys who have a similar jump to Alex are highly regarded inside linebackers.

Alex's broad jump puts him as the 4th best among the competitors at the combine. Awesome!

Small school prospects NEED to show well in these workouts to get noticed. Great job Alex!

Official 40 times: Marshall 4.63, 4.62; Barnett 4.55, 4.56; Singleton 4.63, 4.67 #MSUProDay #BigSkyFB
Colter Nuanez ‏@Bobcat_Beat 5m5 minutes ago Bozeman, MT
Official 3-come drill: Barnett 6.55, Marshall 6.97, Singleton 7.11 #MSUProDay #BigSkyFB
Colter Nuanez ‏@Bobcat_Beat 3m3 minutes ago Bozeman, MT
In the short shuttle: Barnett 4.39, Marshall 4.41, Singleton 4.19 #MSUProDay #BigSkyFB
Colter Nuanez ‏@Bobcat_Beat 2m2 minutes ago Bozeman, MT
Long shuttle: Barnett 11.68, Marshall 11.51, Singleton 11.66 #MSUProDay #BigSkyFB
Alex's official 40 time of 4.63 puts him in 11th place when compared to the 40 linebackers who competed at the combine. For comparison, Shaq Thompson ran a 4.64 (widely regarded as one of the top outside linebackers in a 4-3 scheme).

Alex's 3-cone drill of 7.11 puts him in a tie for 11th when compared to the 40 linebackers at the combine. NDSU's Kyle Emanuel (who was tested out as a LB at the combine) had a 7.10.

Alex's short shuttle of 4.19 puts him in 9th when compared to the combine participants.

Alex's long shuttle of 11.66 puts him in 6th when compared to the combine participants.

I'm posting Alex's numbers because I believe he has the best chance to make a team. When compared to combine linebackers, he performed in the top 12 in:

- 40-yard dash (11th)
- 3-cone drill (11th)
- Broad Jump (4th)
- Short Shuttle (9th)
- Long Shuttle (6th)

His vertical and bench press numbers were in the lower end of where the 40 linebackers tested but like everyone always says, workout numbers are just a small part of the process. Tape is the biggest factor and Alex should have some great tape to go off. The workout should get him noticed because his solid 40 time confirms what scouts should see on tape...speed. Also, the long and short shuttles along with the 3-cone drill are big for linebackers because they show off lateral quickness, explosiveness, and agility. Alex performed awesome in those 3 drills!

Let's do a comparison with Brock Coyle who went the undrafted free agent route to a core Seahawks special teamer at linebacker. This is a path that Alex will most likely find himself in so lets compare.

40 yard dash

Brock - 4.60
Alex - 4.63

Vertical

Brock - 37 in.
Alex - 31 in.

Broad Jump

Brock - 108 in.
Alex - 126 in.

Bench

Brock - 25 reps
Alex - 15 reps

3-cone

Brock - 6.74 sec.
Alex - 7.11

Short Shuttle

Brock - 4.28 sec.
Alex - 4.19

Brock got noticed because of his pro day so I believe Alex should get noticed as well based of this comparison.

Typo on Rob Marshall's vertical. It was 33.5 not 39.5. My bad. Rest looks good.

Wing BP Vert BJ 40 3-cone SS LS

Singleton
6-2 2/3, 233 74 3/8 15 31 10-0 4.62/4.67 7.13 4.19 11.66
Barnett
6-1 7/8, 200 79 3/8 7 31 9-6 4.55/4.56 6.57 4.39 11.61

Marshall
5-11 ½, 198 72 10 33.5 10-03 4.63/4.62 6.97 4.41 11.51

I'll have a story this afternoon.

Did Shawn Johnson not participate? Na'a? Just curious, maybe it was mentioned earlier but missed why.

Posted earlier, Shawn will go to the CFL in May. The rest all decided to hang up the cleats.
