49 - Mac Bignell: the freshman turned some heads by showing progress at strong-side linebacker this spring, but is listed as a defensive back. His emergence could solve the issue of using true freshmen at LB.
(23) - Nick LaSane: the red-shirt frosh RB keeps getting overlooked or forgotten by fans due to all the talent at the position, but he could be a breakout player this season. Knee injuries are reason to give pause when considering his impact, but he looked solid during spring and his size/speed combo is formidable.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what LaSane does this fall. We could run any 1 of 6 RBs out there and it'd be OK by me.

From all reports, LaSane ran mean and looked to hit. Gotta love that. Kirk was a bruiser and didn't shy away from contact, but I can't remember the last running back we had that actively looked to punish anyone foolish enough to tackle him. Think Dan Moore.
And it sounds like he has good speed to boot. We are stacked at RB this year. LaSane and Knight are guys with that desirable power/speed combo, while we have the speedsters in Johnson, Brekke and Davis. Then you have Newell who is more of a pure power back, but who had underrated speed, and can block and catch.

Gates s going to have an impact this year. Colter questioned his durability because of his size, but he didn't miss a game to injury in HS. He's not just fast, he's quick.

Size isn't a concern if you know how to avoid the big hit. Some players are ace at this (see Rams wide receivers during greatest show on turf years), and some players are terrible (see John Ellis his entire MSU career).

Very good point. Numerous players have made it through not only college, but pro careers relatively unscathed. Fran Tarkenton, who played QB at 6-0, 185 didn't suffer an injury until his last, or next to last, season. He had an uncanny knack for avoiding the big hit. He said he would just move in the same direction the hit was coming from to avoid the brunt of the blow. Darrell Green (5-8, 180) played 20 seasons in the NFL. Mark Clayton (5-9, 180) 11 seasons, Mark Duper (5-9, 180)...some of you probably remember Tom White.CelticCat wrote:Size isn't a concern if you know how to avoid the big hit. 44 - Koni Dole: one of the most inspirational stories you'll hear of coming out of college football. A true freshman Dole plays despite losing the lower part of his right leg.
(18) - Bo Hughes: a stout redshirt freshman safety, who will be looking to move up the depth chart and get some special teams time this season. One of three Missoula players on the roster.
(18) - Conner Sullivan: another of the gifted members of the 2014 recruiting class. He has the frame and ability to be a big time WR, but is most likely slated to redshirt his first season to adjust mentally and physically from playing 8-man football to FCS ball.

Does anyone know if Gates put on some muscle/weight this year? I went to the Sonny Holland game and the program still had him at 150. If he's still at 150 after a year in a college lifting program, then I can't imagine him lasting against college defenders...TomCat88 wrote:45 - Luke Daly: red-shirt frosh competing for the place-kicking duties with incoming frosh Trevan Thompson and junior Trevor Bolton. I don't trust the weights in the program. He's small and is always going to be. He was small in HS and never got hurt, while big guys like Oldenberger and Yates did get hurt. I just don't think you can say since someone is slight of build that they'll get injured. Anyone can get hurt catching passes across the middle regardless of size.blueandgoldblitz wrote:Does anyone know if Gates put on some muscle/weight this year? 43 - Alex Singleton: two-year starter at linebacker and team captain, who is poised to have a big season. He's on the CFPA's Linebackers Watch List and is a strong candidate to be on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. Led the team in tackles, was third in the BSC in tackles for loss and tied for third in interceptions.
(17) - Chad Newell: most fans think backup running back when they hear Newell's name, but his recent accolades as special teams player have them thinking front line star. Newell was second team All-BSC ST player in 2013 and is the preseason first team ST player this season. Newell will most likely see a significant increase in his playing time at RB within MSU's multiple variations on offense.

Re: 43(17) days and counting
I don't think of Newell as a backup running back. I think of the So. Utah game and how the coaches left Kirk and Johnson in when they were limping around and didn't give him a carry until the fourth quarter and he got to the hole quickly (the first RB to do so all game) and scored from 13 yards out, but he didn't get another carry in the game.
