Depth now versus in the fall.
With all the injuries and the short-handed nature of this spring, I thought of an interesting debate.
Here's how I think Montana State's depth chart will look on the first day of fall camp
LT — John Weidenaar, Dylan Mahoney
LG— Kyle Godecke, Joel Horn
C — Quinn Catalano, Joel Horn
RG — JP Flynn, Doug Hanson
RT — Alex Eekhoff, Caleb Gillis
QB — Dakota Prukop OR Jake Bleskin
RB — Shawn Johnson OR Anthony Knight, Gunnar Brekke
H-Back — Chad Newell, Curtis Amos
TE — Tiai Salanoa, Lee Perkins
WR — Brian Flotkoetter, Mitch Herbert
WR — Mitch Griebel, David Dash
WR — Tanner Roderick, Shadeed Crockett, Kurt Davis
DE — Odin Coe, Luke Halliburton
DE — Zach Hutchins, Garrett Marino
DT — Taylor Sheridan, WaWa Leota
DT — Taylor Dees, Conner Thomas
LB — Alex Singleton, Rhett Young
LB — Na'a Moeakiola, Michael Foster, Rhett Young
LB — Cole Moore, Blake Braun
CB — Deonte Flowers, Jaylen Price
CB — Bryson Keeton, James Nelson
SS — Robert Marshall, Cody Cleveland
FS — Eryon Barnett, Khari Garcia
Here's what it looks like right now
LT — John Weidenaar, Dylan Mahoney
LG— Kyle Godecke, Joel Horn
C — Quinn Catalano OR Joel Horn, Doug Hanson
RG — JP Flynn, Kyle Godecke
RT — Alex Eekhoff OR Quinn Catalano, Caleb Gillis
QB — Dakota Prukop OR Jake Bleskin
RB — Gunnar Brekke, Chad Newell, Nick LaSane, Cody Vitt
TE — Lee Perkins
WR — Will Krolick, Clay Compton
WR — Mitch Griebel, Jayshawn Gates
WR — Shadeed Crockett, Jacob Stanton
DE — Luke Halliburton, Taylor Dees
DE — Zach Hutchins, Eric Williamson
DT — Taylor Sheridan, Nate Bignell
DT — Taylor Dees, Conner Thomas
LB — Alex Singleton, Robert Walsh
LB — Rhett Young, Trevan Timmer
LB — Blake Braun, Heath Hunter
CB — Deonte Flowers, Jaylen Price
CB — Bryson Keeton, James Nelson
SS — Robert Marshall, Cody Cleveland
FS — Eryon Barnett, Khari Garcia
This spring is a true test of MSU's depth and an exercise in being able to evaluate a slew of young players. So here's my question...with the current spring lineup — an unproven quarterback, veteran offensive line, green RBs and WRs, rookie DEs, short-handed linebackers and a stacked secondary — how many games would Montana State win? None? Could the backups hang with a Big Sky bottom feeder? Interesting question in terms of depth.

Re: Depth now versus in the fall.
With all the injuries we could still beat half of the BSC.
This team needs to find some flow and mesh well in August to be atop 3 team though. With most of the team healthy I'm not worried.
And does this mean you don't think Roderick is coming back?

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Got him in my head as a QB, my bad. Yes, he'll start at WR if he's not the QB.CatBlitz wrote:With all the injuries we could still beat half of the BSC.

Whether it's that rumored guy from SMU or not, do you see Ash bringing in a transfer WR if Roderick doesn't play there?

I'll be happily surprised if we don't see a QB and a RB transfer out this summer.

If our linebackers return to full strength. With the CB additions and if...IF Coe returns healthy and Marino shows up in shape I think our defense can be light years better than last year. As for the offense the QB and young WR's will have to mature as the season goes on. BUT....the key to the offense is the O-line taking over for once in their lives. The Cats have a pile of running backs who could lead this team. If I were to guess Knight will start, Lasane, Johnson and Brekke will rotate. That could help carry this team until the offense completely meshes. But........the Cats have a heck of a test early in Arkansas ST, Eastern, and Central Ark. That stretch will make or break the season. Not to mention the 3 games in Cali.
Dakota Prukop -MSU Quarterback
Dude on my plane is wearin a Montana Grizzlie shirt. I'm pretty sure he's the reason our whole plane smells like B.O.
Kurt Davis-MSU Receiver
I needed a change for one, but for two, I HAD to go to Coach Haucks rival school.

Re: Depth now versus in the fall.
I am surprised you didn't list Marshall Womack on the 2 deep for both spring and fall. Was that just an over sight or is he not progressing as we all hoped he would? Also, how is Wyatt Christensen and Trevan Timmer progressing? Are they going to be recovered on time for fall ball?

Since you go to all the practices, I'm interested in your answers to those questions.Colter_Nuanez wrote:With all the injuries and the short-handed nature of this spring, I thought of an interesting debate.

Re: Depth now versus in the fall.
Womack is in a walking boot and hasn't practiced yet this spring. He came to MSU with a broken hand that required surgery. He hasn't been healthy long enough to make the strides necessary, but if healthy, he'll be a backup left tackle. Side-note on that position — Dylan Mahoney an Caleb Gillis both put on a ton of weight and look much more like college offensive tackles now. Continued maturity could turn them into solid bookends someday. Gillis is a walk-on from Dillon. Mahoney is out of CMR.canyoncat wrote:I am surprised you didn't list Marshall Womack on the 2 deep for both spring and fall. Wyatt Christensen hasn't practiced this spring, but has been rehabbing hard. He's on track to be back by the fall. Trevan Timmer is fully heathy. He's currently MSU's second-string middle linebacker behind Rhett Young with Na'a Moeakiola and Michael Foster on the shelf.

That's good news, Colter. He'll add needed depth at MLB.

Word is that Shadeed Crockett is no longer with the team, and is currently enrolled at NDSU

Just shows how slow it is around here in the summer. This is why BN.com is the best source for MSU football news. You need to check in daily to keep up on things.Hawks86 wrote:Took awhile for that word to get around.
MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: Depth now versus in the fall.
Crockett didn't earn a scholarship in the spring so he went back to NDSU where his brother played because he's from Minnesota and can get by with in-state tuition at NDSU.
