Re: ESPN - Joe O'Brien
I knew Joe while he was here at MSU,great personality, great football credentials, a real "mans man ie. in the Kramer mold). When he got nailed in Townsend half the guys at the Cannery were opening their wallets to help on his legal fees cause they really believed his story that an ex-girl-friend was framing him. He's paid his debt to society and I wish him well, but do I personally want him back at MSU?? Not just NO but HELL NO!!! I can't believe that the way some posters scream every time Ash offers some 18 year old kid that has some " dark" past incident such as a DUI or heaven forbid eggs someones house (remember that one?) or bakes brownies with some grass at his high school is going to destroy everything MSU stands for can now actually want Joe back after all the state-wide publicity we got at the time!!!Can you imagine how our sister U would react to that?? In short best of luck Joe go with God and hope you have a great career, but not at MSU. You had your chance and left that bridge in flames. Adios.

Re: ESPN - Joe O'Brien
Yes it is, but in this circumstance I don't feel any sympathy for Joe. He was using his prior arrest and mistakes as a speaking platform for the youth, all the while he was still living a double life and that speaks to more about his character in my mind, than it does his addiction.77matcat wrote:Addiction is a terrible thing.

I tend not to judge anyone with an addiction. Not sure how you can separate character and addiction's impact on the same.
I don't believe someone with one kidney is a sissy because they don't participate in activities that would jeopardize the one they have. Isn't the above an example of something your born with affecting your behavior also??
Tough nut.
Just my relatively uneducated opinion.

Re: ESPN - Joe O'Brien
What makes you believe that Mr. O'Brien has an addiction? Not everybody that takes a drug is an addict in much the same manner as not everybody that has a beer is an alcoholic.77matcat wrote:Addiction is a terrible thing.

Re: ESPN - Joe O'Brien
I think it's pretty safe to say that O'Brien is a true addict, rather than a "recreational" user. In fact, I'd venture to say that he's probably the very definition of an addict.Rich K wrote:What makes you believe that Mr. O'Brien has an addiction? Re: ESPN - Joe O'Brien
His drug use is responsible for the loss of his coaching career, and it resulted in him doing time in federal prison. Yet, years later he's apparently started using again. We don't know if he just recently suffered a relapse, or if he's been using all along. Either way though, I'd say that if you don't believe he's an addict, then I'm not sure who would be one.Rich K wrote:Maybe he changed his mind. Re: ESPN - Joe O'Brien
When someone continually uses a substance even after it wrecks their health, employment, or relationships then it's safe to say they are dealing with an addiction. I feel bad for him and hope he gets it together. I read in the GF Tribune that he was specifically using Benzodiazepine. That's really scary stuff that kills a lot of people.Rich K wrote:What makes you believe that Mr. O'Brien has an addiction?
