Well, it is 2 weeks today and no sign of Dan. There have been searches, but no clues to his disappearance. There are rumors about things that led up to that evening as to why he left, but no indication of where he went.

I sure hope that we see him back in the neighborhood with his kids very soon, but as of yet there is no good news. He was a couple years ahead of me at MSU.

For my Whatcom County friends: a family friend of ours, Dan Bergman, is missing. He was last seen Wednesday, March 14th at 9:30 pm, and his wife realized he was gone at 8:00 am on Thursday, March 15th. A police report has been filed with the Ferndale Police. Dan did not take anything with him (keys, phone, etc.). It appears that he left voluntarily, and we are concerned that he intended to harm himself. If you saw him Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, please contact the Ferndale Police. Please share this information and his pictures along Facebook to spread the word to the Ferndale and Whatcom County community. Please, do not make or post flyers (we're trying to protect Dan's children from as much of this traumatic event as possible).

Dan Bergman's body was found Thursday. It is quite apparent that he had committed suicide. There had been plenty of speculation as to this likely outcome and many rumors as to why.

Apparently, his wife had presented him with divorce papers on the evening of his disappearance. Unfortunately, Dan decided this was the way to leave his children and friends. It is too bad that he felt this was his only choice.

He was a great guy that will be missed by very many. My heart goes out to his children, family, and friends.

Dan Bergman rest in peace.

Obituary for Daniel Bergman
Dan J Bergman, 48, passed away on March 15, 2012 in Ferndale, Washington. He was born in Havre, Montana on May 23, 1963 to Harold and Donna Bergman.

Dan was an accomplished athlete and led Chinook High School to numerous victories and state championships in wrestling and football. He went to Montana State University-Bozeman on an athletic scholarship and earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering, graduating in 1997.

While at MSU, Dan met Michelle Boyer whom he later married on June 1, 1996 in Story, WY. They moved to Littleton, CO and lived there for the next eight years. The two of them loved to camp, go on long hikes, and ride their tandem bicycle. He worked as a Project Manager for Timewarner Telecom until they moved to Ferndale, WA in 2004 with their two young children, Henry and Alice. Dan had lived in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s and was happy to be back in the land he loved.

It wasn’t long after relocating to Ferndale that Dan took a job as a Structural Engineer and later became a Project Manager for Anvil Corporation where he stayed until his death. He was actively involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers and the International Bridge Building Competition. He took pride in his work and the opportunity to contribute to his profession.

Dan was also involved in the community and greatly enjoyed his role with the KOMO Kulshan Ski Club, as a board member of his homeowner’s association, and a past coordinator of the bike/canoe hand-off of Ski to Sea.

Anyone who knew Dan knew how much he loved his children, Henry and Alice. True to his engineering background, he could break any task down into manageable pieces and was skilled at teaching the kids how to do things – how to use a fork at the dining table, how to read, how to change a bike tire, or how to build a campfire. He was immensely proud of Henry and Alice and his biggest smiles were always saved for them. Dan took great joy in family outings and loved to ski, explore tide pools, attend basketball games, camp, and boat with his family.

Dan is survived by his wife, Michelle, and his two children, Henry and Alice. Also surviving are his parents, Harold and Donna Bergman, and his two sisters, Susan and Tammy Bergman. He will be greatly missed.
