Preferred walk ons get to start fall practice early with the team
walk ons have to wait until school is in session.

Is that true? Either way as a walk on I would try to make sure I can start practice early in august with the scholarship players and not have to wait until school starts and be behind already

A kicker walking on is not unusual today. Many FBS programs like Nebraska end up with walk on kickers getting the job. rooting for the West kid
In concern to walk-ons: Each NCAA Division I team - FBS or FCS - is allowed to bring 95 players to camp. At the FBS level, between 80 and 85 of these players are full scholarship kids. At the FCS level, between 65 and 80 of the kids are on scholarship, hardly any on full rides. The limit of players a team can bring to camp was just boosted from 90 to 95. Preferred walk-ons are a part of the 95 players that come to camp. They are invited to be there.

We used to call it "getting on the 90". If you are on the 90, or I guess now the 95, you are a part of the team. Once camp starts, you are treated like every other player, basically.

If you are a walk-on who isn't preferred, that means you are walking on based solely on your own desire to play. VERY few walk-ons who aren't on the active roster are invited or encouraged by the coaches to join the team. During most of the fall season, a team carries 104 players, meaning about nine kids will make it after fall camp is over. Most of those who do make it are relegated to scout team duties all season if not forever.

At the FCS level, a fair share of players have gone from preferred walk-on to star. It's much more rare to see a kid miss camp then turn into a star. Without going through camp, a player is that much further behind and, more importantly, doesn't have the respect of his teammates because he didn't endure the grind they just completed.

So, Colter,

I guess we must assume you haven't heard anything from the last couple of group of visitors?

I think they're done for now. Wednesday might bring a surprise or two, maybe even a transfer. Looks like a solid group. Transfers may not happen until after spring ball, if at all.

The two guys from Montana are good athletes and versatile. It'll be interesting to see how Barth develops as a QB.

The three OL are as good as any three I can recall from a previous class.

The Texas QB, Arizona DE and Cali LB all look like very good players.

I'm not too sure the Maryland player is going to be part of the this class.

If any more of D-Mac's friends are going to transfer this is probably the last year they can do it.

Just got word that Jackson Mahlum is signing with MSU. Be sure to watch KECI Kayla Anderson for the story.

I was REALLY hoping we'd get Mahlum. Great addition to the class if it holds true!

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

I was hoping, as I do every year for a couple new defensive backs..This position in the past has to be an issue mainly in regards to depth. However, after looking over the roster and seeing that we have 17 returning cs/db's returning I feel much better. Oh and 9 of the 17 were freshman/redshirts last year

This class is looking better and better! Exciting time to be a Bobcat and I can't wait to see if there will be any signing day surprises on Wednesday as there has been the last couple years.

Not sure. I mentioned that we suspected "walk on" and that was neither confirmed nor denied.

Jackson Mahlum is getting a partial scholarship. He waited to commit until this weekend because he wanted to give Ash his verbal in person during his scheduled visit.

Also, Luke Haliburton is coming for sure as a walk on.

If true that's six players from far western/northwestern Montana. None from anywhere else in the state. Just goes to show you how quirky recruiting can be.

Is there going to be a continuous update of all of the letters of intent as they are received or will we just have to wait for the afternoon press conference at the stadium?

True then. Six players from within 100 miles of each other and none from anywhere else. That's unacceptable! They should be giving scholarships and PWOs to players closer to Bozeman. Just kidding, just kidding. :)
