MSU Sports: uncharted territory (21-22, 22-23, 23-24)

Post by TomCat88 » Thu May 16, 2024 11:51 am

I can't recall a better three-year stretch for MSU sports. Please fill in anything else...(corrections).

21-22: Football national runner-up, MBB NCAA tournament (BSC tourney champs), WBB NCAA tournament (BSC tourney champs), Duncan Hamilton national runner up in the steeplechase, men win BSC all sports trophy...

22-23: Paige Rasmussen rodeo (goat tying) national champion, Football national semi-finals (BSC champs), MBB NCAA tournament (BSC regular season and tourney champs), WBB BSC regular season co-champions, Duncan Hamilton national runner up in the steeplechase (second fastest steeplechase in NCAA history), men win BSC all sports trophy...

23-24: MBB NCAA tournament (BSC tourney champs), Lacrosse national champions, men's track BSC champions, Volleyball semifinal of NIVC tournament (runner up BSC tournament), women win BSC all sports trophy…

Also: women's rodeo won national title in 2020-21, Tori Martell national 3-point shooting champion…

Volleyball had a great season last year. Women's track second in BSC. MSU Hockey club had a great year this last year.

Just think how much better we can recruit in track with the new indoor facility.

I agree VB making the final four of a post season competition is worth of Tomcat's list. Also, somebody from WBB won a national 3 point shooting competition. I'm running around at the moment and can't look it up.

That was Tori Martell and it was spring of 21. Pretty cool moment on National TV. It was especially cool because at that time we were still pretty starved for sports on TV. We were watching baseball and basketball with no fans still in a lot of places. That was still 4-5 months before we all got back in Bobcat Stadium for the first time in almost 2 years.

At a National post season tournament. Kind of like the NIT of volleyball.

The vball team also graduated one of the best players to ever come out of the program, Kira Thompsen. She is playing professionally in Sweden.

2nd at the Big Sky tourney. Had a chance to win it too. That was farther than any Cat volleyball team had ever gone though.

Lacrosse was on initial list. Are there any other individual accolades (POYs, All-Americas). I think Andersen was the Defensive POY for FCS (not Buchanan Award). Seems like there were some T/F runners that came close to winning national titles (steeplechase, 1500m)???

I think looking at track school records is a decent way to show the run they're on. On the men's side, school records have been set in 10 of 21 events since 2022:

Michael Swan (2024) in the 200 (2nd best was also this year)
Harvey Cramb (2024) in the 800
Duncan Hamilton (2023) in the 1,500 (6 of the top 10 times are since 2022)
Duncan Hamilton (2022) in the 5,000
Derrick Olsen (2022) in the 110 H
Drake Schneider (2022) in the 400 H
Duncan Hamilton (2023) in the 3,000 Steeplechase (two time national runner up I believe, has second best Steeple time in NCAA history)
Ian Fosdick (2022) in the Triple Jump
Pat Vialva (2024) in the Javelin
4x400m Relay team (2024)
*5 of the top 7 100m times in school history are since 2021
**4 of the top 5 400m times are since 2022

On the women's side, 10 school records have been set since 2021:

Elena Carter (2022) in the 100 (4 of the top 5 times are since 2022)
Camila Noe (2022) in the 5,000
Camila Noe (2023) in the 10,000
Elena Carter (2024) in the 100 H
Alex Hellenberg (2022) in the Triple Jump
Lucy Corbett (2022) in the High Jump (best by 3.5 inches--2nd best is from 1985)
Sydney Brewster (2024) in the Shotput
Carley VonHeeder (2021) in the Javelin
4x100m Relay team (2023)
4x400m Relay team (2024)

This has to be the best run in MSU track history.

Added Hamilton to list. MSU had a 1500 guy that was in the NCAA final but that was probably more than 3 years ago. ???

Seems like there were some good (runner up) finishes at the CNFR that I'm missing.

Yeah, might have been Christian Soratos...I know he placed in the 1,500 but that was about 2015 or 16.

Yeah, might have been Christian Soratos...I know he placed in the 1,500 but that was about 2015 or 16.
That's who I was thinking of. He wore the Superman socks, if I'm not mistaken.

Great photos by Felix, as always. Took a while to get through the 100 hurdles, haha. I'm going to take a lot of heat for this, but I assure you I don't mean it in a weird way. Elena Carter is an impressive looking athlete.
