I see that you have caved into the pc and don't refer to them as the Redskins.

I've opted to be respectful of my Native friends and all other Natives and not proactively celebrate that particular bit of racial branding for the Washington DC football corporation.

Which Indian high schools use that as their mascot?

If you have a problem with me trying to avoid celebrating terms that offend people of a specific ethnic group, especially when there is absolutely no good reason on earth for me (or anyone) to celebrate that term in the first place, then good luck with that. I know I sure as heck wouldn't go around a reservation and address people as "Redskins." Would you?

And yeah, the segment is great. Morphing something from a mascot to a real person has a profound affect on people.

For a Montana take on the issue, here's a good article about Red Lodge changing their mascot back in 2011.

So do you also refer to the Atlanta Baseball organization. Or the Kansas City Football organization that way, or is this just a bandwagon jump for you? Or is this just a cheap attempt to be an allcat type of smartass?

The specific mascot? Don't know, but lets see......Flathead Braves, Browning Indians, Ronan Chiefs, Pryor/Plenty Coups Warriors; all NA schools using NA names/references/imagery. The mascot or logo isn't the only issue - the name Redskins is more of the hot button than the actual mascot/image.

Wow. Good stuff. Yeah, the victim complex on display by one particular person in this whole thing is really interesting, and I think this guy nailed it.

Yes he did, by letting us all know that if you go in to a situation trying to provoke others, then you can quietly and humbly play the victim card yourself.

I don't know how many of you may have already seen this piece in the Tribune, but I think it's important to note that not all Native Americans find the nickname/logo to be offensive. If it's really true that someone from Olberman's staff reached out to Wetzel, it's disappointing that he didn't take advantage of the opportunity to get his message out, regardless of his opinion of Olberman.

Yep, there is no unanimous viewpoint on this. So far in this thread we have seen 8 natives opposed and one in favor.

The thread is not that bad, why would anybody be opposed to it?

I just thought it was interesting that a guy whose father was instrumental in developing the Redskin's logo, not only wasn't offended by the nickname, but was actually very strongly in favor of keeping it. I have a hunch (and that's all it is... I have absolutely zero evidence to support it) that there may be a silent majority in the Native American community that feel similarly to Wetzel, but that like Wetzel, they're just not strongly motivated to get their message out to the public at large.

I don't find it all surprising that a guy who has a direct family connection to the creation of the logo has concluded that the marketing of the corporation in question isn't offensive. Especially after the Washington football corporation hosted him and honored his father (no doubt with an eye on PR to a large degree ... even if one were to believe that Snyder has a large heart).

But it looks like even close family members disagree with him on the name itself:

I'm not going to take the time to find all potentially offensive mascots on reservations, but this is in Montana news this week: Sadly, Elvis Old Bull, one of Montana's greatest HS basketball players ever, was killed in a car wreck this week. Old Bull played for the Lodge Grass Indians (Lodge Grass is on the Crow reservation).

Not really sure why this very sad news is in this thread ... unless you are trying to suggest that a school operated by and comprised of Native Americans referring to themselves as "Indians" is the same as the Washington football corporation using "Redskins" as the branding for their business operations.
