The NCAA wants to get tough on taunting and make it more difficult for football players with concussions to try to tough it out. Both proposals were announced Thursday by the Football Rules Committee and must now be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel. If passed, players who draw flags for taunting gestures on their way to a touchdown would have the penalty assessed from the spot of the foul, taking away the score. Penalties that occur in the end zone would continue to be assessed on the extra-point attempt, 2-point conversion try or ensuing kickoff. The change would take effect in 2011 and on the NCAA's web site, a release said the proposal received near-unanimous support.

did they give any sort of list of what will fall under the taunting rule? are they going to allow any type of celebrating? or does the player just score and give the ball to a ref to avoid penalty. i understand eliminating the over-the-top antics, but i really wish they'd let these kids have fun, and celebrate scoring touchdowns.

I believe this is to take some of the gray area out. I haven't read the whole discussion but the penalty will be enforced from where you start taunting. Take for example the "Deion dance" from the 20 in. Now you lose the touchdown and get a 15 yd penalty from the spot. No one is trying to ban "organic celebration"; you know an unplanned display of emotion rather the scripted ones. As far as "letting the kids play", I'm pretty sure they can still play without flexing in someone's face etc.

thanks. i just wonder if they'll let guys high step and stuff into the endzone? things that i think are harmless but may fall into this taunting category. it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. i'm fully behind the concussion proposals though. unlike celebrating good plays, concussions can lead to long term complications, so i think enforcing stricter rules is a good idea.

The taunting thing is so subjective, (Rider pointing into the stands, EWU reciever slowing down before crossing the goal line)

The ref have not done a good job of consistently calling this and now they are going to take points off the board for it.

** I am not in favor of alloing taunting but, I believe that if this is accepted the BSC refs will screw sombody out of a game this fall with a taunting call.

its pretty simple, if you don't want to get "screwed"..........don't do it
that will pretty much be the message from coaching staffs, I guarantee it

Seriously, the BSC said that the EWU call was bad and it was horrible, that play would have called back a TD, The Rider call was bad too.

could be... but if you don't put yourself in a position to get called (ie pointing into the stands, diving into the endzone, etc) you don't have to worry about it.

I have an idea, lets try to take all of the emotion out of the game, if sombody makes a good play it will be taunting to say "Good Job"

That is the level of some calls made by the BSC, if the refs were consistent I wouldnt have a problem, but they have shown that they are not and the BSC does nothing to improve this. The BSC refs are a "good ol boys club" and they dont get any new blood in. Yes I know a ref that wanted to get in and its more about who you know than how good of a ref you are.

Answer this before replying. What is the proper speed a ball carrier should cross the goal line to avoid a taunting call?

officials don't get to make the rules they just 'get' to enforce them. and from all i can see, most conferences are 'good ol' boys' clubs. consistency is a hard thing considering a major component is 'vision' and not everyone sees things the same (ie fans always think officials make bad calls against their team but good ones for them). as far as the 'speed of the runner' when you're out on the field you can gauge a player slowing down especially when you are running along side them

In no way I do I condone taunting ( I prefer the un PC phrase), but I have no problem at all with player celebration/emotions. The problem I see with this rule is the fact that it is very subjective, and Big Sky officials prove to us in game after game after game after game how inept they can be. I think Coach Ash and staff are very good at letting the players know that taunting/showboating is not allowed, but there are still rare occassions when I'm embarrassed by the actions of a Bobcat player.

those are my thoughts as well gokats. i don't want guys out there acting like idiots. but come on. they're playing a game that SHOULD be fun. i don't know why we need to take that aspect out of the game. i've said this before, but scoring touchdowns is hard. when you get one, i like kids being able to have some fun. but i have seen some pretty ridiculous celebrating too so i see where they are coming from. i just don't see walking into the endzone, or pointing to the crowd as "taunting". be interesting to see how they're called.

Both of those were called by BSC refs this year, and it wasnt walking into the endzone but rather slowing down since no one was within 15 yards of him. I'm against stupid behavior as much as anybody, but in 2009 the taunting call was misused by BSC refs and the SEC also had a major incident with the misuse of the same call. At least the SEC had the balls to suspend the crew for a week, the BSC issued a press release and that was it. I am opposed to giving subjective calls more teeth until the conferences have shown that they will hold refs to a higher standard than they do now.

Oh, and I am not claiming that the Cats always get screwed or that the griz or anybody else get favors from the BSC refs, I really dont think they are biased, I just dont think they are competent. I watch a lot of football all the way form JR High to pros and as a group I think the BSC has one of the worst group of officials out there. I would take our MOA refs over BSC refs anyday. The sad part is that instead of doing somthing about it the BSC seems contend with protecting them.

For those of you who want to hear one of the most honest officials in the game, listen to the first segment of the dan patrick show today either online or on the radio. Tim McLellan is giving an account of being a MLB umpire and also being a guy who blew two big calls during last year's playoffs

Thanks for the head's up...I didn't hear this interview, but I have hear McLellan on DP's show in the past. He is a pretty impressive guy who is brutally honest.

For those interested, you can download the podcast on iTunes for free.

It's that time of year again.........I received my plain brown envelope in the mail and I'll once again put out the plea for people who love sports to get out and join your local officiating pool. Its a great time, you meet some interesting people and get to help the kids in your communities play the sports they love

plus you get to wear really cool clothes
